Chapter 4: The Brother in the Shadows

I stared at the envelope for what felt like an eternity.

My brother’s name was written across the front.

Ethan.

A name I had not seen in years.

A name that belonged to a man I had buried long before I buried Lily.

The room suddenly felt too small.

Too quiet.

Too full of ghosts.

“Adrian?””

Clara’s voice pulled me back.

I looked up.

She was standing near the couch, holding Emma tightly against her shoulder.

Her face had lost all color.

“Who is Ethan?”” Vanessa asked softly.

I turned toward her.

The question was almost insulting.

“You don’t know?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

I laughed under my breath.

“How convenient.””

Her eyes filled with pain.

“I swear, Adrian. I knew Lily. I knew Daniel. But I never knew about Ethan.””

I wanted to believe her.

But belief was a luxury I no longer had.

Not after tonight.

Not after discovering that nearly everyone around me had been hiding something.

I picked up the envelope.

My fingers hesitated over the seal.

Part of me was afraid.

Not of what was inside.

Of what it would change.

Because every time I opened a door tonight, something I thought I knew disappeared behind it.

“You should read it,” Clara said.

I looked at her.

“You knew about Ethan.””

She lowered her eyes.

A pause.

Then:

“Yes.””

My heart sank.

“How long?””

“Years.””

I stared at her.

“You knew my brother was alive?””

Clara shook her head quickly.

“No. I knew he was hiding something.””

“That is not the same thing.””

“I know.””

Her voice broke.

“But Lily asked me to keep a secret.””

The name hit me again.

Lily.

Even after death, she was still standing between me and the truth.

“What secret?””

Clara looked at Emma.

Then at me.

“She told me if anything happened to her, I needed to protect you.””

My chest tightened.

“Protect me from who?””

Clara didn’t answer.

She didn’t need to.

The envelope in my hand suddenly felt heavier.

I tore it open.

Inside was a single piece of paper.

No greeting.

No explanation.

Just a handwritten message.

*Adrian,*

*If you are reading this, then I failed to protect you from the truth. I am sorry.*

My throat tightened.

I kept reading.

*You spent your whole life believing Ethan left because he hated you. That is not what happened.*

I stopped.

The room blurred.

Because that was exactly what I believed.

My brother had disappeared after our father’s death.

He blamed me for everything.

He said I was the favorite.

The chosen one.

The son who got everything.

Then one night, he vanished.

No goodbye.

No explanation.

Just gone.

**Ethan found something about our family business. Something dangerous. He tried to tell me.

I didn’t believe him at first. I should have.**

I looked up.

“Family business?””

Vanessa looked confused.

Daniel had mentioned destroying my family.

But I never imagined this.

I continued.

*Adrian, the accident that killed our father was not an accident.*

The words made my hands shake.

My father.

Another death.

Another lie.

*Ethan discovered someone inside our company was stealing money and covering it with false accounts. When he tried to expose them, he disappeared.*

I swallowed.

*I thought he was dead. Until I found proof that he was alive.*

My eyes moved faster.

*The person who knows where Ethan is now is Daniel.*

I looked up immediately.

Daniel.

But he was gone.

Of course he was.

*Do not trust Daniel. He helped me once. Then he betrayed me.*

The final lines were written differently.

As if Lily’s hand had been shaking.

*The person closest to you is the person you should fear most.*

*Protect Emma.*

*And Adrian…*

I held my breath.

*I’m sorry I didn’t tell you sooner.*

The letter ended.

No signature needed.

I knew her handwriting.

I knew her heart.

And for the first time since she died, I felt something other than grief.

I felt betrayed.

Not by Lily.

By the entire world built around me.

“Your father?”” Vanessa whispered.

I folded the paper slowly.

“Yes.””

She looked at me.

“I didn’t know.””

“Didn’t know what?””

“That there were this many secrets.””

I stared at her.

“You’re one of them.””

Her face fell.

“I know.””

The honesty surprised me.

“I know you don’t trust me.””

“You tried to manipulate me.””

“I did.””

The answer came without hesitation.

I looked at her.

“Why?””

She looked toward Emma.

“Because I knew someone was watching this house.””

Clara stepped forward.

“You should have told him.””

“I tried.””

“When?””

Vanessa’s eyes filled with frustration.

“Before the wedding.””

I froze.

“What?””

She nodded.

“I was going to tell Adrian everything.””

“Then why didn’t you?””

She looked at Daniel’s photograph on the table.

“Because he threatened me.””

The room went silent.

“What did he threaten you with?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“With Lily’s death.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Explain.””

Vanessa sat down.

“When Lily died, I found Daniel at the hospital.””

Clara looked shocked.

“He was there?””

“Yes.””

Vanessa’s voice became quieter.

“He told me if I ever told Adrian what happened, he would make sure I was blamed.””

“For what?””

“For Lily’s death.””

I stared at her.

“You expect me to believe that?””

“No.””

Her answer was immediate.

“I expect you to investigate.””

That stopped me.

Because it was exactly what Lily had asked.

Find the truth.

Not believe anyone.

Not blindly trust.

Find it.

A sound came from upstairs.

A small noise.

Like something falling.

Everyone froze.

Emma started crying again.

Clara immediately looked toward the staircase.

“I’ll check.””

“No.””

I stopped her.

Something inside me told me not to let anyone leave my sight.

Not anymore.

“I’ll go.””

I walked upstairs slowly.

Every step felt heavier.

The house that once felt like home now felt like a place full of hidden rooms.

Hidden lies.

Hidden enemies.

When I reached the hallway, I saw Emma’s bedroom door slightly open.

I was certain I had closed it earlier.

I pushed it open.

The room was dark.

Empty.

Almost.

Then I saw it.

On Emma’s bed.

A small stuffed rabbit.

The one Lily had bought before she died.

I froze.

Because I had locked it away.

Nobody knew where it was.

Nobody.

Except me.

And Lily.

I walked closer.

There was a piece of paper attached to it.

My hands trembled as I picked it up.

Three words.

*ASK YOUR MOTHER.*

I stared at the message.

My mother.

A woman who had been dead for ten years.

A woman who couldn’t answer anything.

Unless…

I turned around.

The bedroom door slowly closed behind me.

Not by itself.

Someone was standing outside.

I heard a whisper.

A voice I recognized.

“Adrian…”

My blood ran cold.

Because it was my mother’s voice.

May you like

And then the person outside the door said:

“Your mother wasn’t dead when Lily found out the truth.””
