Chapter 3: The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Dead
I couldn’t breathe.
For a moment, my mind refused to accept what my eyes were seeing.
The man standing in my doorway couldn’t exist.
Not after the funeral.
Not after the photographs.
Not after I watched his coffin disappear beneath the earth.
“Impossible,” I whispered.
The man leaned against the doorframe, calm and almost amused.
“Is that what you’re going with?””
My fingers tightened around Lily’s letter.
My entire body felt frozen.
“Daniel?””
His name came out like a question.
Like saying it aloud might make him disappear.
But he didn’t.
He just smiled.
The same smile I remembered from years ago.
The same smile that had once made me trust him.
Except now there was something different behind it.
Something empty.
Something dangerous.
Emma started crying again.
Clara immediately picked her up and moved away from the center of the room.
Her eyes never left Daniel.
“You shouldn’t be here,” she said.
Daniel looked at her.
“Still protecting the family, Clara?””
Her face hardened.
“I know what you are.””
A strange silence followed.
I looked between them.
“You know him?””
Clara didn’t answer.
That terrified me.
Because Clara always answered.
She had never been afraid to tell me the truth.
Not once.
“Adrian,” Vanessa said quietly.
I turned toward her.
She looked terrified.
Not angry.
Not defensive.
Terrified.
“You need to listen to me.””
I laughed once, but there was no humor in it.
“Listen to you?””
I held up Lily’s letter.
“My dead wife warned me about you.””
Vanessa flinched.
“And now a dead man walks into my house?””
Daniel stepped inside.
The confidence in his movements made my stomach twist.
“Dead man,” he repeated.
He looked around the room.
“Funny how easily people believe what they’re told.””
My jaw tightened.
“You were killed.””
“No.””
Daniel looked directly at me.
“I was erased.””
The words sent a chill through me.
“What does that mean?””
He didn’t answer.
Instead, he looked at Vanessa.
“You really told him?””
Vanessa’s face went pale.
“I had to.””
Daniel shook his head slowly.
“No, you didn’t.””
His voice became colder.
“You were supposed to keep your mouth shut.””
I stepped forward.
“Who are you?””
Daniel looked surprised.
“You don’t recognize me anymore?””
“I recognize the man I thought I knew.””
A flicker of anger crossed his face.
“Your best friend?””
The memory hit instantly.
Daniel.
My college roommate.
The man who stood beside me when I built my first company.
The man who gave the speech at my wedding.
The man who cried when Lily died.
I had trusted him more than anyone.
Until three years ago.
Until the car accident.
Until the night police told me Daniel had died on a highway outside the city.
“I went to your funeral,” I said.
Daniel smiled faintly.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
His expression changed.
For the first time, I saw something underneath the calm.
Pain.
“I needed everyone to believe I was gone.””
“Why?””
He looked at Vanessa.
Then at Lily’s letter in my hand.
“Because Lily found out.””
The room went silent.
My grip tightened.
“Found out what?””
Daniel walked closer.
“Everything.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“You knew him.””
She didn’t deny it.
That was enough.
“You both knew each other.””
Vanessa whispered:
“Yes.””
My anger exploded.
“How many lies have there been?””
Nobody answered.
“How long have you known each other?””
Daniel spoke.
“Longer than you know.””
I turned toward him.
“Get out of my house.””
His eyebrows lifted.
“You still think this is about your house?””
I stared at him.
He continued.
“This is about your daughter.””
My chest tightened.
Emma.
Every instinct inside me screamed to protect her.
“What did you do?””
Daniel’s expression changed.
“Not me.””
He pointed toward Vanessa.
“She did.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.””
Daniel laughed quietly.
“Still protecting her?””
“I didn’t hurt Emma.””
“But you pushed the stroller.””
The room froze.
I looked at Vanessa.
She looked horrified.
“You told him?””
Daniel smiled.
“I didn’t need to.””
Vanessa looked at me.
“Adrian, it wasn’t what you think.””
I stepped back.
“Nothing is what I think anymore.””
She started crying.
“I never wanted Emma hurt.””
“But you pushed her.””
“Yes.””
The admission was quiet.
But it destroyed something inside me.
Clara gasped.
I felt my heart pounding.
“Why?””
Vanessa covered her face.
“I needed you to find out.””
I stared at her.
“What?””
“I needed you to look deeper.””
Her eyes met mine.
“I knew if I told you the truth, you would never believe me.””
I laughed bitterly.
“So your solution was to almost kill my daughter?””
“No!””
Her voice cracked.
“I pushed the stroller away from the stairs.””
Everyone went silent.
“What?””
Vanessa wiped her tears.
“The video was cut.””
Clara immediately shook her head.
“No. I watched the whole thing.””
“Did you?””
Clara stopped.
Vanessa looked at me.
“The camera angle doesn’t show everything.””
My stomach turned.
“Explain.””
Vanessa walked toward the phone on the table.
“I moved the stroller.””
She pointed toward the staircase.
“I moved it away from Emma.””
Daniel interrupted.
“She’s lying.””
Vanessa spun toward him.
“You know I’m not.””
“You were always weak.””
Her expression changed.
And suddenly I saw something I had never seen before.
Hatred.
Pure hatred.
“You ruined Lily’s life.””
Daniel’s face hardened.
“And you helped her.””
I looked between them.
“What happened?””
Neither answered.
I slammed my hand against the table.
“Enough!””
My voice echoed through the room.
“My daughter was almost killed. My wife left me a warning. My best friend is alive. My fiancée admits she lied.””
I pointed at Daniel.
“I want the truth.””
Daniel stared at me for a long moment.
Then he reached into his coat.
My body immediately reacted.
I stepped back.
But he didn’t pull out a weapon.
He pulled out a photograph.
An old photograph.
He placed it on the table.
I looked down.
And my heart stopped.
It was Lily.
Standing beside Daniel.
And Vanessa.
But that wasn’t what shocked me.
It was the fourth person in the picture.
A person I recognized immediately.
A person who had been with me the night Lily died.
My hands started shaking.
“No…”
Daniel watched my reaction.
“You finally understand.””
I looked at him.
“Who took this?””
Daniel’s smile disappeared.
“Lily.””
I stared at the photo.
The date written on the back was three days before her death.
Three days.
And in the picture, Lily wasn’t scared.
She wasn’t angry.
She was smiling.
Like she trusted everyone standing beside her.
Including the person I thought had betrayed her.
“Adrian,” Daniel said quietly.
I looked up.
“The reason Lily died wasn’t because of an accident.””
The room felt like it was closing in.
“Then what was it?””
Daniel leaned closer.
His voice dropped.
“It was because she discovered who was trying to destroy your family.””
I swallowed.
“Who?””
Daniel looked past me.
Toward the hallway.
Toward the dark reflection in the glass.
And then he said a name.
A name that made Vanessa cover her mouth.
A name that made Clara step back.
A name I never expected to hear.
“Your brother, Adrian.””
I froze.
“My brother died years ago.””
Daniel shook his head.
“No.””
He looked at the photograph.
“He didn’t.””
A cold silence filled the room.
Then my phone rang.
I looked down.
Unknown number.
One new message.
My fingers trembled as I opened it.
There was only one line.
*Stop looking for the truth, Adrian. Lily died because she trusted the wrong person. And now Emma will too.*
I looked up.
But Daniel was already gone.
May you like
And on the table beside the photograph was a second envelope.
With my brother’s name written across it.
