Chapter 5: The Woman Behind the Lies

I couldn’t move.

The voice outside the bedroom door wasn’t loud.

It didn’t need to be.

It carried the impossible weight of a memory I had spent ten years burying.

My mother’s voice.

The same gentle tone that used to call my name from the kitchen.

The same voice that sang to me when I was sick.

The same voice I heard one final time before doctors told me she was gone.

“Adrian…”

The whisper came again.

My hand hovered over the doorknob.

Every instinct told me to step back.

To call someone.

To run.

But another part of me—the part that had spent years wondering if I had been lied to—needed answers.

I opened the door.

Slowly.

The hallway was empty.

No one.

Only the dim light from the downstairs chandelier stretching across the floor.

My heart pounded.

“Who’s there?””

No answer.

I stepped into the hallway.

Then I saw it.

A shadow moving at the end of the corridor.

Someone turning the corner.

I ran.

“Wait!””

My footsteps echoed through the house as I chased the figure.

But when I reached the corner, there was nothing.

Only an old family portrait hanging crookedly on the wall.

I stopped.

Because the portrait wasn’t there before.

My breath caught.

It was a photograph of my family.

My father.

My mother.

Ethan.

Me.

And behind us…

Someone else.

A woman standing in the background.

Someone I didn’t recognize.

I reached for the frame.

Then I noticed something written on the back.

A date.

The date was impossible.

It was taken two years after my mother’s supposed death.

My fingers went numb.

“No…”

“Adrian.””

I turned sharply.

Vanessa stood behind me.

Her face was pale.

“How long have you known?”” I asked.

She froze.

“Known what?””

I held up the photograph.

“This.””

Her expression changed.

Not confusion.

Recognition.

And that was enough.

“You’ve seen this before.””

Vanessa looked away.

“Where did you get it?””

I stepped closer.

“That’s my question.””

She didn’t answer.

“Vanessa.””

She closed her eyes.

“I didn’t know your mother was alive.””

“But you knew this photo existed.””

A long silence.

Then she whispered:

“Yes.””

My stomach tightened.

“How?””

She looked toward the stairs.

“Because Lily had one.””

I felt my anger rising.

“Why does everyone have pieces of my life except me?””

Vanessa didn’t respond.

Because she knew I was right.

I walked downstairs, carrying the photograph with me.

Clara was sitting beside Emma, gently rocking her.

The moment she saw my face, she knew something had happened.

“What did you find?””

I placed the photograph on the table.

Clara stared at it.

Then her expression collapsed.

“Oh my God.””

“You’ve seen it too.””

She slowly nodded.

“I was hoping I would never see that picture again.””

“Why?””

Her hands tightened together.

“Because it proves Lily was right.””

“About what?””

Clara looked at me.

“Your family was never what you thought it was.””

I stared at her.

“Start talking.””

She looked at Emma.

Then back at me.

“When your mother died, everyone believed it was because of her illness.””

“Yes.””

“But that wasn’t the full story.””

My jaw tightened.

“Of course it wasn’t.””

Clara looked down.

“Your mother discovered your father was involved in illegal financial dealings.””

I frowned.

“My father?””

“Yes.””

“That’s impossible.””

“I said the same thing.””

She swallowed.

“But your mother found documents. Accounts. Names.””

“Whose names?””

Clara hesitated.

Then:

“People inside the company.””

I thought of Lily’s letter.

Ethan.

Daniel.

Everyone connected.

“How does this involve Lily?””

Clara’s eyes filled with sadness.

“Because Lily found the same documents years later.””

The room became quiet.

“She started investigating after your father’s death. She wanted to understand why Ethan disappeared.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“And she found Daniel.””

Vanessa nodded.

“Lily discovered Daniel had been helping cover up the missing money.””

My chest tightened.

My best friend.

The man who stood beside me at my wedding.

The man who held my shoulder at Lily’s funeral.

“He lied to me for years.””

“Yes,” Vanessa whispered.

“Why?””

No one answered.

Then a sound came from the front door.

A knock.

Three slow knocks.

Everyone froze.

Clara immediately stood.

“Who would come here at this hour?””

I moved toward the door.

Vanessa grabbed my arm.

“Don’t.””

I looked at her.

“Why?””

“Because whoever is outside knows we found something.””

I stared at the door.

The knocking came again.

Three times.

Slow.

Patient.

Like whoever was outside knew they would eventually be invited in.

I opened the security monitor.

The screen flickered.

Static.

Then an image appeared.

A man standing outside.

Older.

Gray hair.

A familiar face.

My breath disappeared.

“No.””

Vanessa looked at the screen.

And whispered:

“Ethan.””

My brother.

Alive.

Standing outside my house.

I unlocked the door before anyone could stop me.

The moment it opened, he stepped inside.

For a few seconds, neither of us spoke.

I studied his face.

The same eyes.

The same scar above his eyebrow from when we were kids.

The same man I thought I had lost forever.

“You’re alive,” I whispered.

Ethan looked at me.

“I was never allowed to be.””

My anger returned instantly.

“You let me believe you were dead.””

His expression broke.

“I know.””

“Do you have any idea what that did to me?””

“Yes.””

“No, you don’t.””

My voice shook.

“You disappeared. You abandoned me.””

Ethan looked down.

“I was trying to protect you.””

“From what?””

He looked around the room.

At Vanessa.

At Clara.

At the photograph on the table.

Then back at me.

“From the people standing right here.””

The accusation was clear.

I stepped between him and Vanessa.

“What are you talking about?””

Ethan’s face hardened.

“Adrian, you need to understand something.””

He reached into his coat.

I tensed.

But he pulled out a small notebook.

Old.

Worn.

He placed it on the table.

“This belonged to Lily.””

My heart stopped.

“How do you have that?””

“Because she gave it to me before she died.””

Vanessa gasped.

Clara covered her mouth.

I stared at Ethan.

“She met you?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“The night before the accident.””

The room went silent.

“You’re lying.””

“I wish I was.””

I looked at the notebook.

My hands shook as I opened it.

Inside were pages of notes.

Names.

Dates.

Financial records.

And one sentence written in Lily’s handwriting.

*If Adrian discovers the truth, they will try to take Emma away from him.*

I looked up.

“Who are they?””

Ethan’s face turned serious.

“The people who killed Lily.””

My heart stopped.

“Who?””

He looked directly at Vanessa.

Then at Clara.

Then finally at me.

“The same people who have been watching your family since before you were born.””

I stared at him.

“What are you saying?””

Ethan leaned closer.

“Your mother didn’t die from an illness.””

A cold silence filled the room.

“She was murdered.””

I couldn’t speak.

My entire life was built on a lie.

Then Ethan said the words that destroyed the last piece of certainty I had.

“And Adrian…”

He looked at the notebook.

“Lily wasn’t killed because she found the truth.””

May you like

He paused.

“She was killed because she found out you were the next target.””
