Chapter 8: The Sin He Carried
The room went silent.
Not the peaceful kind of silence.
The kind that comes right before something breaks.
I stared at Ethan.
My brother.
The person I had spent years mourning.
The person I had imagined finding again.
In every fantasy, he would explain everything.
He would tell me he left because he had no choice.
He would tell me he loved me.
He would tell me he had been protecting me.
But he was standing in front of me now, admitting the one thing I never expected.
That he was connected to Lily’s death.
“No.””
The word came out before I could stop it.
Ethan’s eyes filled with regret.
“Adrian…”
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You don’t get to say my name like that.””
My mother looked away.
Vanessa stood frozen.
Even Clara seemed unable to speak.
I stepped closer to Ethan.
“You were there?””
He nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
The anger inside me burned hotter.
“And you let me believe it was an accident?””
“I tried to tell you.””
“When?””
“When you came to identify Lily’s body.””
I froze.
“What?””
Ethan swallowed.
“I was there.””
The memory came rushing back.
The hospital hallway.
The cold lights.
The doctors.
The police officer explaining that Lily’s car had lost control.
I remembered seeing Daniel.
I remembered seeing Vanessa.
But I didn’t remember Ethan.
“Where?””
“In the parking garage.””
I stared at him.
“You watched me.””
“Yes.””
“And you did nothing.””
His face collapsed.
“I was afraid.””
I laughed bitterly.
“My wife was dead, my daughter had lost her mother, and you were afraid?””
“I was afraid they would kill you too.””
The words stopped me.
“They?””
Ethan looked around the room.
“The same people who are still watching us.””
My mother stepped forward.
“That doesn’t excuse what he did.””
I turned toward her.
“Don’t.””
Her expression changed.
“You want the truth.””
“I do.””
“Then hear all of it.””
I looked back at Ethan.
“Start.””
He closed his eyes.
For a moment, he looked less like the man who had betrayed me.
And more like the brother who used to sit beside me during thunderstorms when we were children.
“I didn’t kill Lily.””
The words came quietly.
“But I helped create the situation that killed her.””
I waited.
“My father’s company was never just a company.””
He looked at the notebook.
“There were people behind it. Powerful people. People who used businesses to hide money and information.””
I frowned.
“Your father.””
“Our father.””
The correction hurt.
Ethan continued.
“When Dad died, I found documents showing what was happening.””
“You told Lily.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because Lily was the only person who believed me.””
I looked at my mother.
She looked away.
“She helped me investigate.””
Vanessa whispered:
“She knew.””
Ethan nodded.
“Yes.””
I turned toward Vanessa.
“You knew Lily was investigating?””
She nodded.
“But I didn’t know everything.””
“How convenient.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I know how it sounds.””
“It sounds like everyone knew my wife was in danger except me.””
Nobody argued.
Because it was true.
Ethan continued.
“Lily discovered the person controlling everything.””
“Who?””
He looked at my mother.
She closed her eyes.
“No.””
I turned toward her.
“You know.””
She whispered:
“Yes.””
My chest tightened.
“Who?””
My mother’s hands shook.
“Your father’s business partner.””
I frowned.
“My father didn’t have a partner.””
“He did.””
“Who?””
She looked at me.
And said:
“Richard Hale.””
The name meant nothing.
Until it did.
A memory.
A man at family dinners.
A man who used to pat my head and call me his second son.
A man who disappeared after my father’s death.
“Richard was dead.””
My mother shook her head.
“No.””
I felt sick.
“Everyone is alive except the people who are supposed to be.””
No one responded.
Ethan looked at me.
“Richard was the one who controlled the money. Dad was just the face.””
“Why did Lily die?””
His face tightened.
“Because she found proof.””
“What proof?””
“The original records.””
I looked at the notebook.
“You mean these?””
Ethan nodded.
“No.””
My stomach dropped.
“What?””
“The notebook is only a copy.””
My mother suddenly looked alarmed.
“Where is the original?””
Ethan didn’t answer.
And that terrified me.
“Ethan.””
He looked at me.
“Lily hid it.””
“Where?””
“I don’t know.””
“You were helping her.””
“Yes.””
“Then why don’t you know?””
His silence was painful.
Finally, he said:
“Because the last person Lily trusted with it was Daniel.””
The room froze.
Again.
Daniel.
Always Daniel.
The friend who never existed the way I thought he did.
The man who appeared and disappeared whenever the truth got close.
“Where is he now?””
Ethan looked toward the window.
“Gone.””
“Convenient.””
“I know.””
I turned away.
My entire life felt like a puzzle where everyone else had the missing pieces.
Except me.
Then my mother spoke.
“Adrian.””
I didn’t answer.
“Your father wasn’t the only person Richard controlled.””
I slowly looked back.
“What does that mean?””
She hesitated.
Then:
“He controlled me.””
The words stunned me.
“What?””
“He threatened Ethan.””
Ethan looked down.
“He knew I found the documents.””
My mother’s voice broke.
“He told me if I didn’t disappear, my children would suffer.””
I stared at her.
“You left us.””
“I thought I was protecting you.””
“You abandoned us.””
Tears ran down her face.
“I know.””
For the first time tonight, I saw regret in her eyes.
Real regret.
Not an excuse.
Not manipulation.
Just pain.
But pain didn’t erase ten years.
“You could have come back.””
“I tried.””
“When?””
“After Lily died.””
I froze.
“What?””
She nodded.
“I came to the hospital.””
My heart raced.
“You were there?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t you see me?””
“Because I saw Richard’s men.””
The room went cold.
“They were watching you.””
My mother looked at Emma.
“And I realized if I approached you, I would lead them directly to your daughter.””
I looked at Emma.
Everything always came back to her.
My little girl.
The reason Lily fought.
The reason everyone lied.
The reason I was still standing.
Then Clara spoke.
“Where is Daniel?””
Everyone looked at her.
She looked toward the door.
“He wouldn’t leave without taking something.””
Ethan frowned.
“What?””
“Something important.””
Clara walked toward the table.
The photograph.
The notebook.
The necklace.
She searched through them.
Then stopped.
Her face changed.
“What?””
She turned around.
“The notebook.””
Ethan immediately checked.
His expression changed.
A page was missing.
“No.””
“What?””
“The final page.””
My mother looked terrified.
“What was on it?””
Ethan’s voice became barely audible.
“The location of the original records.””
The room went silent.
Someone had taken it.
Someone who knew where it was.
Someone inside the house.
I looked around slowly.
Everyone was watching everyone else.
Then my phone buzzed.
A new message.
Unknown number.
I opened it.
One sentence.
*You finally know the truth, Adrian. But you still don’t know who betrayed Lily first.*
Attached was a video.
My hands shook as I pressed play.
The screen showed Lily.
Alive.
Sitting in this same house.
Talking to someone.
I couldn’t see the other person’s face.
But I heard Lily’s voice.
“If Adrian finds out what you did, he will never forgive you.””
The person replied.
A voice I recognized.
A voice that made every person in the room freeze.
Because it was my own voice.
The video ended.
Nobody spoke.
I looked at Ethan.
At Vanessa.
At Clara.
At my mother.
Then I whispered:
“That wasn’t me.””
The screen lit up again.
Another message appeared.
*Then find out who has been pretending to be you.*
And beneath it was a photograph.
A photograph taken earlier tonight.
Of me standing in the living room.
Except I wasn’t there.
Because the person in the picture was wearing my clothes.
May you like
Had my face.
And was smiling beside Lily.
