Chapter 9 - The War of the Syndicate

Julian inserted the card into the isolated reader,

his fingers flying across his mechanical keyboard as decryption routines bypassed the file security layers.

Within sixty seconds,

the central wall monitor illuminated,

displaying hundreds of scanned documents,

financial ledgers,

and audio recordings.

"My God,"

Julian whispered,

staring at the screen in utter shock.

"It's not just District Attorney Sterling.

It's the entire Northern Judicial Circuit."

The documents detailed a massive network of corruption spanning three states.

Judges,

police chiefs,

and federal agents were receiving millions in monthly kickbacks from Marcus Vance's black-market operations.

More importantly,

there was a log of active safehouses used by Sterling to hold high-value political hostages.

At the top of the list was a private estate in St. Charles,

Illinois,

marked with the code name: 'Birdcage'.

"Sarah is there,"

I realized instantly,

my blood surging with adrenaline.

"They didn't kill her because she knew the access codes to these encrypted files.

They're keeping her alive to force her to speak."

Suddenly,

the estate's perimeter alarms blared throughout the mansion,

their harsh red strobes flashing across the walls.

The heavy security monitors switched automatically to the main gate camera feeds.

Four heavy tactical trucks had just smashed through the iron gates,

splintering the security barriers into kindling.

Dozens of heavily armed mercenaries in unmarked black tactical gear poured out of the vehicles,

opening fire on my outer security guards.

"We're under attack!"

Dominic shouted over the tactical comms,

his voice cut through with the sound of automatic rifle fire.

"It's Gabriel Vance!

Marcus Vance's brother!

He brought forty men!"

"Dominic!"

I roared into my earpiece,

drawing my weapons from the wall rack.

"Initiate Lockdown Protocol Alpha!

Get Lucas and Emily into the subterranean panic bunker immediately!"

"On it,

Boss!"

Dominic yelled back amidst the deafening noise of shattering glass and heavy explosions.

I charged up the concrete stairs,

my Sig Sauer in my right hand and an assault rifle strapped across my chest.

The front entrance doors burst inward under a breaching charge,

filling the grand foyer with thick grey smoke and flying wooden shrapnel.

Three mercenaries rushed through the smoke,

their rifles raised,

sweeping the area.

I didn't give them a chance to react.

I raised my rifle and squeezed the trigger.

Rat-tat-tat-tat!

The bullets tore through the front two guards,

sending them tumbling backward onto the marble steps.

The third mercenary ducked behind a pillar,

returning fire,

his rounds chipping the white marble beside my head.

I rolled behind the mahogany grand piano,

popping up to drop him with two precise shots to the neck.

"Hold the line!"

Julian shouted,

taking position at the top of the grand staircase,

firing his automatic weapon into the oncoming waves of attackers.

Outside,

the night erupted into a full-scale tactical war as my loyal guards counter-attacked from the perimeter watchtowers.

Gabriel Vance stepped through the ruined front entrance,

holding a heavy shot-rifle,

his face twisted in a maniacal rage.

"Ross!"

Gabriel screamed over the gunfire.

"You killed my brother in the sewers!

I'm going to burn this house to the ground and slaughter everyone inside!"

"You should have stayed in the shadows,

Gabriel!"

I shouted back,

flanking his position from the mezzanine balcony above.

May you like

"Because tonight,

none of you are leaving this estate alive!"
