Chapter 7 - The Shadows of the Empire

By three o'clock in the morning,
both children were fast asleep in the master suite upstairs,
their breathing soft and rhythmic under thick goose-feather duvets.
Doctor Evans had completed his examination,
confirming that while both were severely malnourished and exhausted,
they had sustained no permanent physical harm.
Downstairs in the mahogany-paneled war room,
the atmosphere was tense,
heavy with the scent of dark espresso and gun oil.
Dominic,
Julian,
and four tactical team leaders stood gathered around the central oak table,
which was covered with encrypted laptops,
maps of Chicago,
and military-grade surveillance monitors.
In the corner,
Miller's body had already been cleared away,
his traitorous blood cleaned from the basement concrete,
leaving only a lingering sense of cold betrayal in the air.
"Miller was playing both sides for over eighteen months,"
Julian reported,
tapping the touchscreen of a high-tech decryption device connected to Miller's recovered burner phone.
"He wasn't just taking money from Marcus Vance.
He was routing financial intelligence directly to an offshore account in the Cayman Islands."
"Who owns the account?"
I asked,
leaning over the table,
staring at the blue light of the monitors.
"That's the dangerous part,
Boss,"
Julian replied,
his expression grim.
"The shell corporation managing the account isn't owned by Vance.
It belongs to Evelyn Sterling."
The room fell completely silent.
The name hung in the air like a lethal poison.
Evelyn Sterling was the Senior Federal District Attorney for Illinois,
one of the most powerful legal figures in the entire Midwest,
a woman who had built her public career on prosecuting organized crime.
"Sterling?"
Dominic asked,
his eyes narrowing in disbelief.
"She's been appearing on television claiming she was dismantling Vance's human trafficking syndicates."
"It was a smokescreen,"
I said,
the pieces fitting together into a terrifying picture.
"Sterling wasn't prosecuting Vance.
She was protecting him.
She used Vance to run black-market operations beneath the law,
using Miller inside my organization to ensure I never found out."
"And your ex-wife?"
Dominic asked softly,
looking up at me.
"Sarah wasn't hiding from me,"
I realized,
my fists clenching until my knuckles turned white.
"She discovered Sterling's connection to Vance a year ago.
She took Lucas and ran,
not to keep him from me,
but to protect him from Sterling's hit squads."
"Where is Sarah now,
Boss?"
Julian asked quietly.
I remembered Vance's taunting words in the tunnel before the explosion.
'Your wife is at the bottom of Lake Michigan...'
"Vance claimed she was killed,"
I said,
my voice dropping into a register of icy,
unshakeable fury.
"But Vance was a liar and a opportunist.
He wanted me broken,
he wanted me to give up searching."
I turned to Dominic,
my authority cutting through the silence of the room like a blade.
"I want every asset in our network mobilized.
I want Sterling's personal bank records,
her private residences,
and her secret communications intercepted within three hours."
"What about Marcus Vance?"
Julian asked.
"His body hasn't been recovered from the slaughterhouse collapse."
"If Vance survived that fall,"
I replied,
locking my gaze onto the map of the city,
"he will crawl straight to Sterling for protection.
May you like
And when he does,
we will strike them both down together."
