Chapter 15 - The Reckoning of Chicago

The dawn broke over Chicago in brilliant shades of gold and crimson,

the storm finally passing,

leaving the air crisp and clean.

Our convoy pulled up the winding driveway of my Oak Park estate.

The iron gates were secured,

my loyal guards standing at full attention along the perimeter.

I carried Sarah inside the grand foyer,

where Elena ran forward with warm blankets and hot tea,

tears streaming down her face.

From the top of the marble staircase,

two small figures appeared.

Lucas and Emily stood side by side,

looking down into the sunlit hall.

Lucas froze,

his eyes locking onto his mother.

"Mom?"

he whispered.

Sarah broke away from my arm,

stepping forward with trembling knees,

her arms reaching out wide.

"Lucas!"

she cried out.

Lucas bolted down the stairs,

his small feet flying across the marble,

throwing himself into his mother's arms.

They collapsed onto the floor together,

holding each other,

weeping,

laughing,

filling the vast mansion with the sound of pure,

unbroken joy.

Emily stood at the bottom of the stairs,

watching them quietly with a faint,

shy smile.

Sarah looked up,

seeing Emily,

and held out her arm toward the orphan girl who had made this miracle possible.

"Come here,

sweetheart,"

Sarah whispered tearfully.

Emily hesitated for a second,

then ran into their embrace,

wrapped inside the warm arms of the mother she had never known.

I stood beside Dominic,

watching my family reunited under the golden light of the morning sun.

Dominic handed me a tablet showing live television broadcasts.

Every major news network in America was broadcasting District Attorney Evelyn Sterling's arrest live from the Federal Courthouse.

Her entire corrupt syndicate was being exposed line by line,

her accomplices being handcuffed across the state.

"It's over,

Boss,"

Dominic said quietly,

a rare smile on his face.

"The city is safe.

The Ross family is restored."

I looked down at my hands,

no longer trembling with grief or rage,

and felt a deep,

profound peace settle over my soul.

"No,

Dominic,"

I said gently,

May you like

placing a hand on his shoulder as I walked toward my family.

"It's not over.
