Chapter 17 - The Trial of Evelyn Sterling

The Federal District Court of Illinois was swarming with hundreds of journalists,

camera crews,

and federal agents from across the nation.

Outside the massive marble pillars,

crowds of citizens gathered,

holding signs demanding justice for the victims of the criminal network that had operated in secret for years.

My heavy armored convoy pulled up to the front plaza,

flanked by federal escort vehicles.

When I stepped out,

dressed in a sharp double-breasted suit,

surrounded by Dominic and six legal advisors,

photographers' flashes went off like blinding lightning.

I ignored the screaming questions of the reporters,

walking with a steady,

commanding stride up the marble steps into the central courtroom.

Inside the packed gallery,

Evelyn Sterling sat at the defense table,

wearing an orange prison jumpsuit,

her hands heavy with steel handcuffs.

Beside her sat three high-priced defense attorneys,

their faces pale,

knowing they were fighting a losing war.

When I walked down the center aisle,

Sterling turned her head,

her eyes locking onto mine with burning hatred.

I took my seat at the prosecution witness stand,

swearing the oath with my hand flat upon the Bible.

"Mr. Ross,"

the Lead Special Prosecutor began,

standing before the judge.

"Can you state for the record what occurred on the night of November fourteenth?"

For two hours,

I laid out the entire truth before the court.

I detailed the kidnapping of my son,

the murder of innocent victims,

the secret human trafficking facilities,

and the millions of dollars in kickbacks routed through Sterling's Cayman Islands accounts.

I produced the original micro SD card recovered from my son's locket,

its decrypted contents playing across the giant courtroom monitors.

Voices of corrupted judges,

police officials,

and politicians echoed through the silent room,

their crimes laid naked before the eyes of the world.

Sterling's lead attorney stood up,

his voice shaking.

"Objection!

The witness himself is a known figure in organized crime!"

The Chief District Judge slammed his gavel down with thunderous force.

"Objection overruled!

The physical evidence presented by the witness is overwhelming and absolute!"

The judge turned his stern gaze toward Evelyn Sterling.

"Evelyn Sterling,

for the crimes of treason,

human trafficking,

extortion,

and conspiracy to commit murder,

you are hereby sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole."

Gavel struck the oak block.

BOOM.

The courtroom erupted into cheers and wild applause from the gallery.

Sterling collapsed into her chair,

heaving with silent sobs as federal marshals dragged her away in chains.

As I walked out of the courtroom,

I knew the legal battle was won,

May you like

but deep in the shadows of the city,

one final, lingering danger still awaited its end.
