Chapter 6 - Sanctuary in the Storm

The heavy iron gates of the Oak Park sanctuary swung open,

allowing the warm amber light of the grand hallway to spill across the wet driveway.

I carried Lucas wrapped tightly in my coat,

his small head resting exhausted against my shoulder,

his shallow breaths warming my neck.

Dominic walked closely beside us,

his eyes scanning the perimeter,

his tactical rifle held at low ready.

Elena,

my loyal housekeeper,

stood waiting at the front entrance with dry towels,

her eyes brimming with tears the moment she saw the boy.

"Dear Lord,"

she whispered,

crossing herself,

"the young master has returned."

"Prepare the primary suite on the second floor,"

I commanded softly,

stepping into the grand foyer,

where the marble floor reflected the glowing chandeliers.

"Call Doctor Evans immediately.

I want a full medical evaluation for both children."

"Right away,

Mr. Ross,"

Elena replied,

rushing upstairs to prepare the room.

I carried Lucas into the main living room,

where a massive stone fireplace crackled with roaring warmth.

Sitting on the plush velvet sofa,

wrapped in her thick cashmere blanket,

was Emily.

She held a cup of warm milk in her hands,

her small feet dangling over the edge of the cushions.

When she saw us enter,

her eyes widened,

and she nearly dropped her cup onto the rug.

"Lucas!"

she cried out,

forgetting her fear,

scrambling off the sofa.

Lucas stirred in my arms,

opening his tired eyes slowly.

"Emily?"

he mumbled,

his voice weak and raspy.

I gently lowered Lucas onto his feet,

supporting his body so he wouldn't fall.

Emily ran across the polished floor,

throwing her arms around Lucas's neck,

hugging him with all the strength her tiny frame possessed.

"You made it!"

she wept,

resting her forehead against his shoulder.

"Your dad saved you,

just like you said he would!"

Lucas wrapped his arms around her,

looking up at me through wet eyelashes.

"I told you,

Emily,"

he whispered,

a faint,

proud smile touching his lips.

"My dad never breaks a promise."

Standing there,

watching these two traumatized children comfort each other in the center of my vast,

lonely mansion,

something inside my heart healed and broke at the same time.

I knelt down beside them,

placing my massive hands over their small shoulders.

"Emily,"

I said,

looking directly into her wide brown eyes.

"You saved my son's life today.

You brought him back to me."

She shook her head timidly.

"I just gave you the picture..."

"No,"

I interrupted firmly,

my voice trembling with deep emotion.

"You took a risk that no seven-year-old child should ever have to take.

You gave up your only food,

you stood out in the freezing rain,

and you waited for a stranger because you loved my son."

I leaned closer,

wiping a streak of dried dirt from her cheek.

"From this night forward,

you will never sleep in the cold again.

You will never go hungry.

You will never be alone.

This house is your home,

and as long as I draw breath,

you are my daughter."

Emily stared at me in disbelief,

her lip trembling as fresh tears welled up in her eyes.

"Really?"

she whispered,

as if afraid she was dreaming.

"Really,"

I swore,

placing my hand over my heart.

"I give you my solemn word as Sebastian Ross."

She threw her arms around my neck,

plunging her face into my shoulder,

sobbing with relief.

I held both children in my arms under the warm light of the fireplace,

May you like

while outside,

the rain continued to pound against the thick bulletproof glass of my home.
