Chapter 16 - The New Dawn of Oak Park

The morning sunlight streamed through the high stained-glass windows of the dining hall,

casting soft mosaic colors across the heavy mahogany table.

For the first time in over twelve months,

the silence of the Ross estate was filled with the warm,

living sound of children laughing.

Lucas sat beside Emily,

his plate piled high with fresh pancakes,

berries,

and whipped cream that Elena had prepared with immense joy.

Emily ate slowly,

her eyes wide as she looked around the grand room,

still unable to fully believe that she was allowed to eat as much as she wanted.

Sarah sat across from them,

wearing a soft velvet robe,

her color slowly returning to her cheeks after months of captivity.

She reached across the table,

gently wiping a trace of syrup from Emily’s chin.

"Eat as much as you like,

sweetheart,"

Sarah said softly,

her eyes overflowing with maternal warmth.

"This food is for you."

Emily looked up at Sarah,

her tiny hands clutching her fork.

"Are you sure I won't get into trouble?"

she whispered,

her voice hesitant.

"No one will ever trouble you again,"

I said,

stepping into the dining hall,

wearing a tailored charcoal suit instead of tactical armor.

I pulled up a chair beside Sarah,

resting my hand gently over hers.

"Today,

my legal team is filing the official paperwork for your adoption,

Emily.

You will legally be Emily Ross,

my daughter,

Lucas’s sister,

and an heir to everything I own."

Lucas slammed his fork down on his napkin,

his face lighting up with unbridled joy.

"Really,

Dad?

Emily is really my sister now?"

"Really,

son,"

I smiled,

looking at Emily,

whose eyes filled with big,

glistening tears.

She slid off her chair,

ran around the table,

and threw her tiny arms around my neck,

hugging me with all the innocence she had kept safe through the darkest nights of Chicago.

"Thank you...

Daddy,"

she sobbed into my shoulder.

Hearing that word for the first time from the little girl who had offered me her last piece of bread broke through the final piece of ice around my heart.

I held her close,

kissing her head,

swearing in my heart to build a world where she and Lucas would never know fear again.

Dominic entered the dining room quietly,

holding an encrypted tablet,

his face serious.

"Boss,"

he whispered,

bowing slightly to Sarah.

May you like

"The Attorney General of the United States is on line one.

They are requesting your presence at the Federal District Court downtown."
