Chapter 5 - The Midnight Eviction

With Daniel secured in the back of the police car,
the chaos on the lawn shifted entirely to Lorraine.
She stood alone on the driveway,
shivering in my expensive silk robe,
staring at the departing taillights of the cruiser that was taking her golden child to jail.
The remaining officer turned to me,
clearing his throat,
pulling a small notebook from his front pocket.
"Ma'am,
since this is your legal residence,
we need to know how you want to proceed with the remaining occupant."
I looked at Lorraine,
watching her chest heave with dramatic,
exaggerated sobs,
waiting for me to rush over and comfort her like I had been trained to do for years.
She slowly turned her head,
glaring at me with pure venom,
trying to salvage whatever scrap of authority she thought she still possessed.
"I will go inside and pack my things,"
she snapped,
wiping her nose,
"I cannot believe I ever allowed my son to marry such a vindictive,
heartless woman."
"You aren't going inside,"
I said,
my voice echoing off the brick facade of my beautiful home.
Lorraine stopped in her tracks,
her eyes narrowing,
her hands balling into tight fists at her sides.
"Excuse me?"
she hissed,
taking a threatening step toward me.
"You are not setting foot inside my house,"
I repeated,
turning to the police officer,
"I want her removed from my property immediately for trespassing."
Lorraine gasped,
a sharp,
desperate intake of air,
as the officer firmly stepped between us,
holding his hand up to stop her advance.
"Ma'am,
you heard the homeowner,
you need to vacate the premises immediately,"
the officer ordered,
his tone leaving absolutely no room for debate.
"My clothes are in there,
my medication is in there,
you cannot leave an old woman out in the freezing cold,"
she cried out,
her arrogant facade completely shattering into pathetic begging.
"You should have thought about that before you stood in my kitchen and smiled while your son bruised my wrist,"
I replied,
turning my back on her,
walking confidently up the stone steps toward my front door.
I punched my security code into the keypad,
hearing the heavy locks disengage,
stepping into the warm,
quiet foyer of my house.
Outside,
I could hear Lorraine screaming,
crying,
and begging the officers for a ride to a hotel as they forced her to walk down the long driveway in her slippers.
I closed the heavy oak door,
sliding the deadbolt into place,
taking a deep,
May you like
shaky breath as I finally stood alone in the absolute silence of my own home.
This was just the beginning of my revenge,
