Chapter 12 - The Unexpected Visitor At The Safe House

Seeking a temporary escape from the chaotic media storm swirling around the downtown financial district,

I returned to my private estate in the late afternoon,

hoping for a quiet moment of reflection.

Instead,

as I pulled my car into the circular driveway,

I noticed a sleek,

unfamiliar black sedan parked near the iron gates,

with a tall,

distinguished man leaning casually against the hood.

He pushed himself upright as my tires crunched on the gravel,

walking slowly toward my driver-side door with his hands neatly tucked inside the pockets of his tailored overcoat.

I lowered the tinted window just a few inches,

my hand resting cautiously on the heavy canister of pepper spray hidden in the center console.

"Evelyn Vance,

I presume,"

the man said,

his voice smooth,

deep,

and carrying an unmistakable accent that hinted at international travel.

"My name is Julian Thorne,

and I am a business partner whom your husband royally screwed over six months ago."

I stared at him through the narrow gap in the glass,

weighing the risks,

before pushing the button to lower the window all the way down.

"What kind of business partner,"

I asked,

my eyes narrowing as I assessed his posture and the expensive cut of his suit.

"The kind who invested two million dollars into Daniel's consulting firm under the impression that he was an honest,

successful entrepreneur,"

Julian replied with a bitter,

humorless chuckle,

resting his forearm on the top of my car door.

"Only to discover last week that Daniel had systematically embezzled every single cent of that capital to fund his high-end mistresses and purchase offshore properties."

I unlocked the passenger door,

gesturing for him to step closer,

realizing that this unexpected visitor might possess the missing puzzle piece that would guarantee Daniel never saw the light of day again.

"Get in,"

I said,

opening the heavy oak front door of my house moments later,

leading him into the sunlit living room where the red folder lay spread out across the coffee table.

Julian walked over to the table,

glancing down at the piles of bank statements and encrypted ledgers,

before looking up at me with a profound mixture of shock and profound admiration.

"You are dismantling him piece by piece,

aren't you,"

he whispered,

a slow,

appreciative smile spreading across his lips.

"Daniel thought he was the smartest predator in the room,"

I replied softly,

May you like

pouring two glasses of sparkling water,

"he simply forgot that the woman he locked in the basement of his mind was holding the master key."
