Chapter 4 - The Collapse Of The King

"It is not a lie, Daniel,"

I said softly,

crossing my arms,

feeling a surge of immense power washing over my entire body.

"My aunt left this property to me,

and my name is the only one on the deed,

the mortgage,

and the property tax records."

Daniel stared at me,

his breath coming in short,

shallow gasps,

his mind clearly struggling to process the devastating truth I had just revealed.

For six years,

he had paraded around the house,

hosting lavish parties,

bragging to his business partners about the incredible real estate investment he had made.

He had used the illusion of ownership to control me,

to trap me,

to make me feel like a guest in my own sanctuary.

"You let me believe,"

he stammered,

taking a shaky step forward,

"You let me pay for the renovations,

you let me act like the master of this house."

"You paid for the renovations using the money you stole from my inheritance,"

I corrected him,

my voice turning ice-cold,

cutting through his pathetic defense like a sharp knife.

"And I have the bank statements,

the wire transfers,

and the fraudulent loan applications to prove it."

The second police officer,

who had been quietly observing the exchange,

stepped forward and pulled a pair of heavy metal handcuffs from his belt.

"Daniel Vance,"

the officer said,

his voice deep and authoritative,

"Based on the evidence found inside the residence,

and the outstanding warrants for corporate fraud issued this afternoon,

you are under arrest."

Lorraine let out a blood-curdling shriek,

throwing herself toward her son,

clawing at the officer's uniform as he forcefully turned Daniel around and pinned his arms behind his back.

"You can't do this,"

she screamed,

tears streaming down her wrinkled face,

"He is a good man,

he is the provider,

she is framing him."

The sharp,

metallic click of the handcuffs locking into place echoed across the driveway,

the most beautiful sound I had ever heard in my entire life.

Daniel did not fight back,

he did not scream,

he simply hung his head in absolute defeat as the officer read him his rights,

pushing him toward the back of the police cruiser.

As he was forced into the back seat,

he looked at me through the window,

his eyes filled with a toxic mixture of hatred and fear,

May you like

realizing that the quiet,

obedient wife he had abused for years had just masterminded his total destruction.
