Chapter 13 - The Arrest Of The Enabler In Chief

While Julian and I were meticulously comparing our respective troves of financial evidence,
my phone began to vibrate violently against the polished wood of the coffee table.
It was a direct text message from Richard Sterling,
my high-powered attorney,
accompanied by a blurry photograph taken outside the county jail.
The image showed Lorraine standing near the public entrance,
frantically waving her hands at a pair of police officers who were currently placing a fresh set of steel handcuffs around her wrists.
I stared at the screen in absolute disbelief,
letting out a sharp gasp that instantly caught Julian's attention.
"What is it,"
Julian asked,
leaning forward,
his eyes locked onto my bewildered expression.
"It seems Lorraine's maternal instincts finally landed her behind bars,"
I said,
turning the phone around so he could see the photographic evidence of the matriarch's downfall.
According to Richard's accompanying text,
when Lorraine had realized her son's bail had been completely denied due to the severity of the federal embezzlement charges,
she completely lost control in the facility lobby.
She had physically assaulted a court clerk,
screaming that the judicial system was corrupt,
demanding that the judge release her precious son immediately,
and even attempting to steal a set of master keys from an unguarded security desk.
The authorities had not hesitated to slap the cuffs on her,
charging her with assaulting an officer of the court,
disorderly conduct,
and attempted theft of government property.
"Like mother,
like son,"
Julian remarked with a dry,
dark laugh,
shaking his head in utter amazement at the sheer stupidity of the Vance family.
"They truly believed they were above every law in existence,"
I added,
feeling an overwhelming wave of pure poetic justice wash over my soul.
I tapped a quick reply to Richard,
instructing him to ensure that Lorraine was held without bail alongside her criminal son,
denying them any legal leniency whatsoever.
The psychological cage they had built to trap me for six agonizing years had completely collapsed,
May you like
burying both of them in the deep,
unforgiving rubble of their own toxic arrogance.
