Chapter 9 - THE RECKONING AT THE SHORE

A heavy snowstorm was blanketing Havenbrook in white silence when the black SUV rolled down the gravel path toward my cottage.

I was standing on the covered wooden porch, holding a warm mug of chamomile tea, watching the gray waves crash against the rocks.

My small baby bump was now clearly visible beneath my thick cream-colored sweater.

When the headlights cut through the falling snow and the sleek vehicle pulled to a halt by my picket fence, my breath seized in my lungs.

There was only one car like that in the entire world.

The driver's door swung open into the biting wind.

Adrian stepped out into the snow.

My hand dropped instinctively to protect my stomach, my heart slamming against my ribs like a trapped bird.

He looked older.

The sharp, pristine billionaire from the Manhattan galas was gone.

Dark shadows circled his sunken eyes, and silver threads had appeared at the temples of his dark hair.

He wore no gloves, no security detail behind him, just a dark woolen coat dusted with white flakes.

He walked slowly toward the porch steps, his gaze locking instantly onto the gentle curve of my belly.

A sound broke from his throat—a choked, wounded sob that sounded unnatural coming from a man who commanded legions.

He stopped at the bottom of the wooden steps, refusing to step onto my porch without permission.

“Claire,” he whispered into the howling wind.

His voice was trembling with such agonizing sorrow that the cold air seemed to freeze around it.

“You shouldn't have come here, Adrian,” I said, my voice steady, though my knees felt weak beneath me.

“I signed the papers.”

“The marriage is over.”

“I haven't signed them,” he replied, tears openly tracking down his wind-burned cheeks.

“I will never sign them.”

“I don't care about your papers, Adrian! I don't care about your empire, your money, or your empty promises!”

My voice finally broke, the accumulated pain of three years of silence spilling out into the storm.

“You stood ten feet away from me and told hundreds of people that I didn't exist!”

“You looked me in the eye and chose a room full of strangers over the woman who bled for you in the dark!”

“I will not raise my baby in the shadows of your shameful secrets!”

Adrian didn't defend himself.

He didn't offer a corporate justification or a tactical underworld excuse.

Instead, the most feared man in New York dropped hard onto his knees in the freezing, ankle-deep snow.

He bowed his head, his large shoulders shaking with uncontrollable sobs, right there at the base of my humble steps.

“I was a coward, Claire,” he wept, pressing his forehead against the icy wood of the bottom step.

“I thought power was keeping you safe.”

“I thought making myself untouchable was the only way to deserve you.”

“I didn't see that in trying to protect the empire, I became the monster that destroyed my own home.”

“I don't ask you to forgive me today.”

May you like

“I don't ask you to come back to New York.”

“I just ask you to let me sit in the dirt outside your door so I know you and our child are warm.”
