Chapter 3 - THE SECRET IN THE CLINIC

The morning after the gala, the rain came down in gray sheets over the city.

Adrian had returned to the penthouse at three in the morning, smelling of expensive cigars and Vanessa’s floral perfume.

He had attempted to reach for me in the dark, pulling me against his chest with lazy entitlement.

I had laid there as rigid as a marble statue, staring at the digital numbers on the nightstand until he fell asleep.

He never noticed that I hadn't slept for a single second.

By eight in the morning, while Adrian was in high-level executive meetings downtown, I was sitting in a private medical office.

The clinic was discreet, located on the Upper West Side, far away from any eyes connected to the Moretti family.

Dr. Aris, an elderly woman who had delivered children for three decades, adjusted the monitor beside my bed.

The rhythmic, galloping beat of a tiny heart suddenly filled the quiet examination room.

It sounded like thunder.

It sounded like a desperate, fierce declaration of life inside my hollowed-out body.

Tears finally escaped my eyes, rolling silently down my cold cheeks.

“You are eight weeks pregnant, Claire,” Dr. Aris said, her voice filled with gentle warmth.

“The gestational sac is strong, and the heartbeat is one hundred and fifty-five beats per minute.”

“Everything looks exceptionally healthy.”

I stared at the black-and-white sonogram screen, watching that tiny, pulsing miracle.

Adrian’s child.

The heir to an empire built on shadows, secrecy, and unkept promises.

A child whose father had stood before hundreds of people less than twelve hours ago and proclaimed that he walked alone.

Dr. Aris handed me a printout of the sonogram and a small white tissue.

“Are you alright, my dear?” she asked softly, sensing the crushing weight settling over my shoulders.

“You seem very alone for such wonderful news.”

“I am alone,” I answered, my voice steady despite the wetness on my cheeks.

“And that is the best thing that could happen to this baby.”

I folded the sonogram carefully and tucked it inside the zippered compartment of my leather purse.

Leaving the clinic, I did not head to the office or return to the penthouse.

Instead, I walked three blocks down to an independent legal firm specializing in family law.

I sat across from an attorney who had no ties to Wall Street or the Moretti syndicates.

“I need divorce papers drafted immediately,” I told him, placing my marriage certificate on his polished desk.

The attorney looked at the document, his eyebrows raising slightly as he read the name Adrian Moretti.

“Mrs. Moretti, do you understand the legal ramifications of serving a man of his stature?” he asked carefully.

“I am not asking for his money,” I replied without hesitation.

“I do not want his trust funds, his real estate, or his corporate stock.”

“I want a clean, unilateral separation of assets based on our pre-existing independent accounts.”

“I will sign away all claims to the Moretti estate in exchange for one simple thing: complete severance.”

The attorney studied my eyes, recognizing the quiet determination of a woman who had reached the absolute edge.

“It will be ready by Friday morning,” he said.

I nodded, stood up, and shook his hand.

For three years, Adrian had controlled every term of our existence.

He had decided when we could touch, where we could be seen, and what truth the world was allowed to hear.

Now, the clock had started on my terms.

He had told the world he was unmarried.

I was going to make sure that lie became the permanent reality of his life.
