Chapter 15 - Fractured Vows

The door slammed shut behind us, shaking the small glass panes of the cottage windows.

The Maybach had rolled away down the coastal road, leaving behind the suffocating stench of expensive perfume and existential ruin.

Adrian immediately locked the deadbolts and closed every heavy linen curtain, plunging our warm home into a grim, defensive twilight.

He set his gun on the kitchen counter, pacing the small living room like a trapped panther.

Sophia began to wail, startled by the tension vibrating through my body.

I walked back and forth across the braided rug, rocking her frantically against my chest, tears finally spilling freely down my cheeks.

"You lied to me," I choked out, the betrayal hitting me all over again with fresh, blinding agonizing force.

"Claire, please—"

"You told me it was over, Adrian!" I screamed, unable to keep the storm inside any longer.

"You told me Prague was just an overseas corporate merger!"

"Now your mother is talking about grand juries, federal prisons, and Russian cartels!"

"How much blood is on this baby's name?"

Adrian halted his pacing, his eyes wild, his hair disheveled.

He looked completely shattered, the invincible titan stripped down to a desperate father.

"Prague was the operation that bought my freedom, Claire!" he yelled back, his voice breaking with sheer anguish.

"The Russian syndicate had compromised our entire shipping network."

"They were using my family's vessels to smuggle human cargo and illegal arms."

"When I found out, I seized their accounts, gave the evidence to the international maritime authorities, and dismantled the pipeline myself."

"I took their money to pay off the corrupt politicians who were protecting them."

"Yes, it was illegal under federal commerce statutes, but it was the only way to destroy them without triggering a gang war on American soil!"

"And your mother kept the evidence?" I gasped, holding my crying daughter tighter.

"My mother collects sins like currency," Adrian whispered, dropping his head into his hands.

"She saved the duplicate records to keep me on a leash."

"She doesn't care about Sophia because she loves her."

"She wants Sophia because the trust can only release the offshore reserves to the legal guardian of the third-generation heir."

"If she controls Sophia, she controls seventy billion dollars."

The scale of the monstrous greed made me feel physically sick.

My sweet, innocent baby was nothing more than an ATM pin code to the woman who bore Adrian.

"We leave tonight," I said decisively, wiping the tears from my jaw.

"We take Sophia, we take our cash, and we get on a boat to Canada."

"We disappear into the Yukon."

Adrian looked up, his expression terrifyingly grim.

"We won't make it to the border, Claire."

"My mother’s surveillance grid is already tracking the roads out of Maine."

"If we run, we become fugitives, and she wins custody by default the moment federal marshals intercept our car."

"Then what do we do?" I cried out, my voice cracking under the weight of helplessness.

"Do we just wait here until her lawyers and mercenaries kick the door down?"

Adrian walked toward me, his hands reaching out, hesitating before gently touching my trembling shoulders.

"No," he said, his eyes burning with a dark, terrifying resolve.

"We don't run."

"We don't hide in shadows anymore."

"Tomorrow night is the annual Vance Century Gala at the Plaza in New York."

"Every federal judge, every syndicate patriarch, and every corrupt politician my mother owns will be in that ballroom."

"We walk in through the front doors."

"Together."
