Chapter 14 - The Return of the Matriarch

"You always did have the posture of a stray dog, Claire."

Victoria's voice was like crushed ice sliding down a crystal tumbler.

She didn't move an inch as I approached, her two mountainous bodyguards standing like granite statues flanking the cottage steps.

Sophia shifted in her sleep, nuzzling into my collarbone, blissfully unaware of the predator examining her.

I forced my spine straight, refusing to cower the way I had done in her Manhattan penthouse years ago.

"You are trespassing on private property, Mrs. Vance," I said, my voice steady, cutting through the ocean roar.

"Get off my lawn."

A faint, mocking smirk played across Victoria's withered, sculpted lips.

"Your lawn?" she scoffed, exhaling a plume of invisible smoke into the damp sea air.

"This entire zip code could be bought with the pocket change from my foundation."

"Don't flatter yourself with legalities, girl."

"You are a transient squatter who seduced my heir during his rebellious youth."

"I didn't seduce your heir," I retorted, taking a calculated step forward, feeling no fear, only unadulterated venom.

"Your son crawled on his knees through the mud to earn the right to stand beside me."

"He chose a simple cottage over your blood-soaked empire."

"And he chose me over your corrupt dynasty."

Victoria’s smirk vanished, replaced by an expression of cold, aristocratic revulsion.

"He chose an illusion," she snapped, taking a step toward me.

Her bodyguards shifted their weight, their hands disappearing beneath their coats.

Instantly, the click of a firearm mechanism echoed from the pine woods behind the cottage.

"Tell your dogs to pull their hands out of their suits, Mother," Adrian's voice rang out, deathly calm, coming from the shadows of the treeline.

Adrian stepped into the clearing, holding a heavy-caliber handgun casually at his side.

His clothes were stained with grease, and his eyes were entirely black with murderous intent.

Victoria did not even flinch at the sight of her son holding a weapon pointed at her entourage.

"Still so dramatic, Adrian," she said smoothly, turning slightly to face him.

"Did you think hiding in this filthy fishing trough would erase who you are?"

"Did you think the Russian syndicates would forget the four hundred million dollars you seized from their docks?"

"Did you think the Vance name could simply vanish because you bought a five-dollar wedding ring for a secretary?"

Adrian walked past his mother's bodyguards without looking at them, stopping squarely between Victoria and me.

He placed a broad, protective hand against my back, his touch grounding my chaotic pulse.

"The debt with the Russians was settled with my own blood and cash before I left," Adrian growled.

"The board approved my severance."

"The board is a collection of terrified old men," Victoria replied coldly.

"I hold fifty-one percent of the trust."

"And according to Section Nine of our grandfather’s covenant, if an heir reproduces outside the sovereign registry, the mother must surrender custody or face total asset forfeiture and criminal prosecution for ancestral embezzlement."

"You have forty-eight hours to bring that child to the Vance Manor in Westchester."

"If you do not, Adrian, I will release the sealed grand jury files on your operations in Prague."

May you like

"You will spend the rest of your life in a supermax federal prison."

"And Claire will watch our guards escort that baby into my private nursery."
