Chapter 12 - The Bloodline Clause

The heavy mahogany box sat unopened on the wooden kitchen table of my seaside cottage.

Outside, the Atlantic waves crashed violently against the jagged cliffs, as if nature itself reflected the storm brewing inside our small sanctuary.

Adrian had dismissed the messenger with a violence that made the floorboards shake, nearly breaking Marcus's wrist before tossing him onto the gravel road.

Yet the venom had already been injected into our peaceful existence.

Sophia was sleeping in the wicker bassinet near the hearth, completely oblivious to the legal noose tightening around her neck.

I stood by the counter, wrapping my trembling arms around my ribs, staring at the polished silver serpent emblem.

"Explain it to me," I demanded, my voice shaking with raw fury and terror.

"You told me your empire was dismantled, Adrian."

"You swore on your life that you gave up your seat at the High Table."

Adrian stood near the window, his suit jacket discarded on a chair, the sleeves of his white shirt rolled up to his forearms.

His jaw was clenched so hard that a vein pulsed violently against his temple.

"I gave up my corporate shares, Claire," he answered, his voice thick with agony and suppressed rage.

"I surrendered my voting rights, my penthouse, my private security fleet, and my public titles."

"Everything I personally owned, I liquidated to ensure you and Sophia would never have to run again."

"Then what is the Bloodline Accord?" I pressed, stepping closer to him, the fear burning through my tears.

"Why did that man look at my two-month-old daughter like she was a piece of inherited real estate?"

Adrian closed his eyes, inhaling deeply through his nose as if trying to restrain an inner monster.

When he opened them, the emerald irises were clouded with a dark, bitter history.

"My grandfather was a paranoid patriarch," Adrian confessed, his tone hollow.

"Seventy years ago, when the family business operated strictly in the shadows, he created a private trust in Geneva."

"The trust dictates that every firstborn child carrying the Vance bloodline belongs legally to the Family Council until their eighteenth year."

"If the parents marry without the unanimous approval of the Council, the child is declared a ward of the Matriarch."

"My mother controls the Council now."

The blood drained from my face so quickly that my knees threatened to buckle.

"Your mother..." I gasped, grasping the edge of the kitchen table for balance.

"Victoria Vance."

"The woman who refused to even look at me when you first brought me to your estate."

"The woman who told me that a girl from an orphanage was fit only to clean the silver, not inherit the name."

"She knows Sophia exists," Adrian said, his fists clenching until his knuckles turned ghost-white.

"And she intends to take her from us."

"Over my dead body," I snarled, a savage maternal instinct roaring to life inside my chest.

"I lived three years in your shadow, Adrian."

"I swallowed your silence, I endured your galas where you introduced me as nobody, and I forgave you because I believed you changed."

"If you let your mother take my baby, I swear to God I will tear your entire family down to ash."

Adrian crossed the room in two strides, cupping my face in his warm, calloused hands.

"Listen to me, Claire," he whispered against my forehead, his breath ragged and fierce.

"No one touches Sophia."

May you like

"No one takes you from me."

"I played the prodigal son who ran away for love, but if they want the monster they created, I will show them why the underworld knelt before me."
