Chapter 9: The Name Hidden In The Files
For ten seconds after the call ended, I couldn’t move.
I stood in the middle of my kitchen, holding the phone against my ear even though Marcus was already gone.
The silence was louder than anything he had said.
Someone in our family.
Those four words kept repeating in my mind.
Someone in our family.
Ethan watched me carefully.
“Mom?””
I lowered the phone.
“It was your father.””
My son’s expression changed.
“What did he say?””
I looked at him.
“He said Daniel wasn’t the person controlling everything.””
Ethan stood up.
“Then who was?””
I wished I had an answer.
Instead, I had a question that scared me more.
“Your father said the person who started this plan was someone in our family.””
The room went still.
Ethan shook his head.
“No.””
I knew that reaction.
He wanted to reject it.
Because sometimes the truth hurts more when it comes from someone you love.
“Ethan…”
“No.””
He walked toward the table where the documents were spread out.
“Dad lied. Chloe lied. Daniel lied.””
He looked at the papers.
“But not everyone.””
I wanted to believe him.
I really did.
The next morning, we met with the attorney again.
His name was Robert Hayes.
He had spent years handling business disputes, but even he looked uncomfortable reading through Marcus’s files.
“There are several layers here,” Robert said.
“What does that mean?”” I asked.
“It means your husband was not acting alone.””
Ethan leaned forward.
“Who was helping him?””
Robert tapped a folder.
“That’s what we need to determine.””
He opened a document.
“This company was created three years ago.””
I frowned.
“What company?””
“A consulting company connected to your husband’s business.””
I looked at the name.
Williams Strategic Holdings.
My stomach tightened.
“Marcus never told me about this.””
Robert looked at me.
“Because your name was intentionally removed from the paperwork.””
Ethan clenched his jaw.
“Why?””
“Because someone didn’t want your legal involvement.””
I stared at the documents.
The signatures.
The dates.
The meetings.
There were dozens of transactions.
And then I saw it.
A name.
My fingers froze.
“No.””
Ethan looked at me.
“What?””
I pointed.
“That signature.””
Robert glanced down.
“Do you recognize it?””
I couldn’t speak.
Because I did.
The signature belonged to someone I had trusted for years.
Someone who sat at my dinner table.
Someone who called me family.
Ethan took the paper.
His face changed.
“Uncle Ray?””
I closed my eyes.
My husband’s older brother.
Ray Williams.
The man who hugged me at my wedding.
The man who told Ethan he was like a second father.
The man who stood beside Marcus when he started his company.
“No,” Ethan whispered.
Robert looked between us.
“Who is Ray Williams?””
“My brother-in-law,” I said.
“And he had access to these accounts?””
“Yes.””
Robert nodded slowly.
“That explains a lot.””
I looked at him.
“How?””
“Because the documents show someone with internal knowledge.””
My hands became cold.
“Meaning?””
“Meaning whoever did this knew your family.””
Ethan stood.
“I need to talk to him.””
I grabbed his arm.
“No.””
He looked at me.
“Mom.””
“Not yet.””
“Why are you protecting him?””
I shook my head.
“I’m not.””
I looked at the papers.
“I’m protecting us.””
Because something felt wrong.
Ray was many things.
Annoying.
Proud.
Sometimes selfish.
But evil?
I didn’t know if I could believe that.
That afternoon, Ray called.
I stared at the screen.
His name glowing.
Ethan looked at me.
“Answer it.””
I did.
“Linda.””
His voice sounded normal.
Too normal.
“Ray.””
There was a pause.
“You found out.””
My heart dropped.
Not hello.
Not how are you.
You found out.
“You knew?””
Another pause.
Then:
“I knew this day would come.””
I stood up.
“What did you do?””
Ray sighed.
“You don’t understand.””
“Then explain.””
“Marcus was weak.””
I froze.
“What?””
“He always was.””
My grip tightened around the phone.
“You’re blaming him?””
“I’m saying he needed someone to make decisions.””
“And that someone was you?””
Silence.
That was enough.
“Ray.””
His voice lowered.
“I was trying to save the company.””
“The company?””
I laughed.
“The company my husband built with my help?””
“Linda, you don’t know everything.””
I looked at Ethan.
The same sentence.
Everyone said the same sentence when they were hiding something.
“You took my name off documents.””
“I protected assets.””
“You planned to take my house.””
“That wasn’t supposed to happen.””
I froze.
“What does that mean?””
Ray didn’t answer.
“Ray.””
Finally, he said:
“Ask Marcus why he changed the plan.””
My heart started racing.
“What plan?””
But the call had already ended.
That night, Ethan found something hidden inside one of the old storage boxes.
A small flash drive.
No label.
No explanation.
Just one word written on it.
“Truth.””

And when we opened the first file…
We heard Marcus’s voice.
