The Seat They Took From Me / Chapter 13 / 15

Chapter 13: The Last Lie Marcus Told

The room went silent.

Not the uncomfortable silence from before.

Not the kind where people were waiting for someone to explode.

This was different.

This was the silence right before the truth destroys the last thing people are still holding onto.

Everyone looked at Marcus.

I did too.

For years, I had asked myself the same question.

How much did he know?

How much did he choose?

How much of our family’s pain came from his decisions?

And now, standing in that conference room, I finally saw the answer written across his face.

Fear.

Not fear of Daniel.

Not fear of losing money.

Fear of being exposed.

“Marcus,” Ethan said quietly.

My son’s voice carried disappointment.

Not anger.

That was worse.

Anger means you still believe someone can change.

Disappointment means something inside you has already broken.

Marcus looked at Ethan.

“I can explain.””

Ethan shook his head.

“Dad.””

A pause.

“Please don’t say that.””

Marcus looked down.

Daniel leaned against the table with a small smile.

“You see? He always does this.””

I turned toward Daniel.

“What?””

“He lets other people take the blame.””

Marcus looked up sharply.

“Don’t.””

Daniel laughed.

“Why? Because she deserves to know?””

My stomach tightened.

“Know what?””

Nobody answered.

I looked at Marcus.

“What is he talking about?””

Marcus closed his eyes.

For a moment, I thought he would lie again.

Then he spoke.

“I knew Daniel was dangerous.””

The words hit the room.

Ethan stepped back.

“You knew?””

Marcus nodded slowly.

“But I didn’t know how far he would go.””

I stared at him.

“Then why did you work with him?””

His voice became quiet.

“Because I thought I could control him.””

I almost laughed.

That sentence.

The same arrogance.

The same belief that everyone else was a piece on a chessboard.

“You thought you could control him?””

Marcus looked ashamed.

“Yes.””

“And what happened?””

He looked at me.

“I lost control.””

Daniel smiled.

“Finally, something honest.””

Marcus ignored him.

“When the company started struggling, Daniel offered help.””

Ethan crossed his arms.

“And you accepted.””

“Yes.””

“Without telling Mom.””

Marcus looked away.

“Yes.””

I felt the familiar pain return.

Another secret.

Another decision made without me.

Marcus continued.

“I thought I could fix everything before you found out.””

I shook my head.

“You always thought that.””

His eyes met mine.

“I was embarrassed.””

“Embarrassed?””

“Yes.””

He swallowed.

“I built something with you. You believed in me before anyone else did.””

His voice cracked.

“And then I started losing it.””

The room stayed quiet.

“I didn’t want you to see me fail.””

I looked at him.

“So you destroyed everything instead?””

Marcus had no answer.

Because there wasn’t one.

Daniel interrupted.

“This is touching, but it changes nothing.””

He picked up the documents.

“The company still belongs to whoever has control.””

I smiled.

“No.””

His expression changed.

“What?””

I walked toward the table.

“The company belongs to the person who built it.””

Daniel laughed.

“You?””

I looked at him.

“Yes.””

He shook his head.

“You were just his wife.””

That sentence.

That one sentence.

Almost made me laugh.

Because it proved he never understood anything.

“I was the one who paid the first bills.””

I placed a document down.

“I was the one who signed the first contracts.””

Another document.

“I was the one who kept the company alive when Marcus wanted to quit.””

Daniel’s smile faded.

Robert stepped forward.

“She is listed as an original shareholder.””

Daniel looked at Marcus.

“You didn’t tell him?””

Marcus didn’t respond.

Daniel’s face changed.

Because he finally realized.

Marcus had hidden things from him too.

Everyone in that room was discovering the same painful truth.

Marcus didn’t just lie to me.

He lied to everyone.

Including the person he betrayed me with.

Daniel became angry.

“You think this changes anything?””

He looked at me.

“You have no idea what I have.””

I stood still.

“What do you have?””

His smile returned.

“Proof.””

He pulled out his phone.

“I have messages showing Marcus wanted out.””

Marcus froze.

Daniel continued.

“I have recordings.””

My heart sank.

“Of what?””

Daniel looked at Marcus.

“Of you.””

Marcus’s face went pale.

The room changed.

Because suddenly Daniel wasn’t just defending himself.

He was preparing an attack.

He pressed a button.

A recording began.

Marcus’s voice filled the room.

“I need this done before Linda finds out.””

I froze.

Ethan looked at me.

Daniel smiled.

“You hear that?””

The recording continued.

Marcus’s voice.

“I don’t care what happens. I just need her removed.””

My heart stopped.

Marcus whispered:

“No.””

Daniel looked satisfied.

But then the recording changed.

A different voice appeared.

Ray.

“Say it again.””

Marcus answered:

“I need her removed from the business.””

Ray asked:

“And from the marriage?””

A long pause.

Then Marcus said:

“I don’t know.””

Daniel stopped the recording.

“There.””

He looked at me.

“Your husband wanted you gone.””

I looked at Marcus.

And for the first time…

he didn’t defend himself.

Because he knew.

Part of it was true.

The room waited for me to break.

But I didn’t.

Because Daniel made one mistake.

He thought the worst thing I could hear was that Marcus wanted to leave.

He was wrong.

The worst thing I had ever heard was that I spent years fighting for someone who had already given up.

I took a breath.

Then I looked at Daniel.

“You’re right.””

Everyone turned.

I continued.

“He wanted me gone.””

Marcus looked at me.

“But you forgot something.””

Daniel frowned.

“What?””

I picked up the final document.

“The recording has a timestamp.””

His face changed.

“And?””

“And it was recorded after you threatened him.””

Silence.

Robert stepped forward.

“We checked the metadata.””

Daniel’s confidence disappeared.

“This recording was edited.””

Daniel’s face went blank.

Ethan looked at him.

“You thought you were the only one collecting evidence.””

Daniel stepped back.

For the first time, he wasn’t in control.

But before anyone could call the authorities, his phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

And the color drained from his face.

May you like

Because whoever was calling…

was someone even he feared.
