Chapter 10: The Recording Nobody Was Supposed To Hear
The recording began with static.
For a moment, nothing happened.
Then Marcus’s voice filled the room.
“I don’t know if I can do this.””
I looked at Ethan.
That was not the Marcus we knew.
Not the confident man from the graduation hall.
Not the man who always had an excuse.
This sounded like someone afraid.
A second voice answered.
Ray.
“You don’t have a choice anymore.””
My stomach tightened.
Ethan turned up the volume.
Marcus spoke again.
“I never wanted it to go this far.””
Ray laughed.
“That’s your problem, Marcus. You always think you can walk away when things get difficult.””
I covered my mouth.
The recording continued.
“What happens to Linda?”” Marcus asked.
A pause.
Then Ray answered:
“She signs the papers.””
“And if she doesn’t?””
“You know what to do.””
The room went cold.
Ethan stopped the recording.
“What does that mean?””
I couldn’t answer.
Because I knew.
I knew exactly what my mind was trying not to understand.
“Play it.””
Ethan looked at me.
“Mom…”
“Play it.””
He pressed the button.
Ray’s voice returned.
“She’s emotional. She’ll believe she has no options.””
Marcus sounded uncomfortable.
“She’s the mother of my child.””
Ray replied:
“And you’re forgetting what’s at stake.””
The recording ended.
Neither of us spoke.
Then Ethan whispered:
“He knew.””
I looked at him.
“Who?””
“Dad.””
The word hurt him.
More than I expected.
Because despite everything, Ethan still wanted his father to be better.
“I thought he was just selfish.””
His eyes filled.
“But he knew.””
I sat beside him.
“People can do terrible things and still be complicated.””
He shook his head.
“No.””
He looked at me.
“Some choices tell you exactly who someone is.””
That night changed something.
I stopped hoping Marcus would become the man I married.
Because that man was gone.
The next morning, we confronted Ray.
He agreed to meet at a coffee shop.
I don’t think he expected Ethan to come.
The moment Ray saw him, his expression changed.
“Ethan.””
My son sat across from him.
“Why?””
Ray looked uncomfortable.
“Why what?””
“Why did you help destroy my family?””
Ray leaned back.
“You’re young. You don’t understand business.””
Ethan laughed quietly.
“That’s your excuse?””
“It’s the truth.””
I looked at Ray.
“You manipulated my husband.””
“I guided him.””
“You controlled him.””
He sighed.
“Marcus was drowning.””
“And you pushed his head underwater.””
For the first time, Ray looked angry.
“You think I wanted this?””
I stared at him.
“I think you wanted control.””
Silence.
Then Ray said something I never expected.
“You want the truth?””
Ethan leaned forward.
“Yes.””
Ray looked at him.
“Your father was never supposed to leave your mother.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
Ray continued.
“The plan was different.””
“What plan?””
He looked at me.
“Marcus was supposed to transfer ownership, protect the business, and keep the family image.””
I felt sick.
“So Chloe…”
“Was a distraction.””
Ethan stared.
“Dad never loved her?””
Ray shrugged.
“He liked how she made him feel.””
The words were cruel.
But somehow, they made sense.
Chloe wasn’t the reason everything broke.
She was just another piece on the board.
“Then why did he leave?”” I asked.
Ray looked away.
“Because he got greedy.””
My heart pounded.
“What does that mean?””
Ray reached into his briefcase.
He pulled out a folder.
“I found out too late.””
Ethan took it.
Inside was a series of documents.
The first page had a date.
The second page had a signature.
The third page had a name.
My name.
Except I never signed it.
Ethan looked up.
“Mom…”
His voice was different.
“What?””
He handed me the document.
At the bottom was my signature.
A perfect copy.
A fake.
Someone had forged my name.
May you like
And the person who created the fake document…
was someone who knew exactly how I signed.
