The Seat They Took From Me / Chapter 11 / 15

Chapter 11: The Signature That Wasn't Mine

I stared at the page until the letters blurred.

My signature.

My name.

My handwriting.

But it wasn’t mine.

“I never signed this.””

Robert, our attorney, confirmed it later.

“This is a forgery.””

The word sounded heavy.

A forgery.

A lie made permanent on paper.

Someone didn’t just betray me emotionally.

Someone tried to erase me legally.

Ethan sat beside me while Robert examined every document.

“Can they do this?””

Robert shook his head.

“No.””

“Then why?””

“Because they thought you wouldn’t fight.””

That sentence stayed with me.

They thought I wouldn’t fight.

Maybe because I had spent years being quiet.

Maybe because I spent my life putting everyone else first.

But they misunderstood something.

Silence was never weakness.

I was quiet because I loved my family.

Not because I was powerless.

That evening, Marcus came to my house.

I almost didn’t open the door.

But I did.

He looked exhausted.

No expensive watch.

No confident smile.

Just a tired man standing on my porch.

“Linda.””

“What do you want?””

He looked inside.

At the house.

The house he tried to take.

“I know everything came out wrong.””

I stared at him.

“Wrong?””

He looked down.

“I was manipulated.””

I almost laughed.

“You keep saying that.””

“Because it’s true.””

I stepped outside.

“Marcus, you made choices.””

He looked hurt.

“I was scared.””

“So you lied?””

“Yes.””

“So you betrayed me?””

His silence answered.

I nodded.

“Then stop pretending someone else made every decision for you.””

His eyes filled.

For a second, I saw regret.

Real regret.

But regret doesn’t undo damage.

“I never wanted to hurt you.””

I looked at him.

“You hurt me every day you chose not to tell the truth.””

He swallowed.

“I need your help.””

I froze.

Of course.

Even now.

After everything.

“What?””

“Daniel is going after me.””

I stared.

“You mean the man you worked with?””

“Yes.””

“The man you helped?””

Marcus closed his eyes.

“I know.””

I almost felt sorry for him.

Almost.

“What do you want me to do?””

He hesitated.

“Help me expose him.””

I shook my head.

“You want me to save you?””

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“I want you to stop him from hurting Ethan.””

That got my attention.

“What did he do?””

Marcus looked toward the street.

“Daniel knows about Ethan’s trust fund.””

My blood ran cold.

“What trust fund?””

Marcus looked confused.

“You don’t know?””

I shook my head.

And for the first time, Marcus looked genuinely surprised.

“Your father created one before he died.””

My breathing stopped.

My father.

Ethan’s grandfather.

“He left money for Ethan.””

Marcus nodded.

“Daniel found out.””

I looked at him.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Marcus looked away.

Another secret.

Another lie.

“I thought I could handle it.””

I laughed softly.

“You always think that.””

He didn’t argue.

Because he knew.

Before he left, he handed me a folder.

“I’m giving you everything.””

I didn’t take it immediately.

“Why?””

His eyes met mine.

“Because I finally realized something.””

“What?””

“I spent years trying to prove I didn’t need you.””

A pause.

“But I destroyed the only person who actually believed in me.””

For the first time in years, Marcus sounded honest.

But honesty arriving late doesn’t erase the years of lies.

I took the folder.

Not for him.

For Ethan.

After Marcus left, I opened it.

Inside was one final document.

A transfer agreement.

A hidden account.

And a message from Daniel.

The message was dated two days before graduation.

The words were simple.

“Once Ethan speaks publicly, we move to the next phase.””

My hands shook.

The next phase.

They weren’t finished.

May you like

The graduation wasn’t the end.

It was the beginning.
