The Seat They Took From Me / Chapter 8 / 15

Chapter 8: The Person Behind The Plan

I stared at the signature.

My mind refused to accept what I was seeing.

“Who is this?””

The attorney looked at me.

“Your husband’s business partner.””

I looked at Ethan.

“Daniel?””

He nodded slowly.

“The same person from the emails.””

I felt a strange emptiness.

Because somehow, after everything, I was still capable of being surprised.

“How long has this been happening?””

The attorney flipped through the documents.

“Several years.””

Years.

That word hurt more than anything.

Not days.

Not months.

Years.

Ethan leaned forward.

“What exactly did they do?””

The attorney pointed to the papers.

“They created financial agreements without your knowledge.””

I swallowed.

“But why?””

“To protect assets.””

I frowned.

“What assets?””

The attorney looked at me carefully.

“Your husband’s company.””

I laughed quietly.

“The company I helped him start?””

Nobody answered.

Because everyone knew.

The company didn’t appear out of nowhere.

I was there.

I helped him write business plans at midnight.

I cooked meals while he worked.

I sacrificed vacations.

I supported him before anyone knew his name.

And now he wanted to erase me.

The attorney continued.

“There’s more.””

I looked up.

“What?””

He placed another document in front of me.

“This was filed six months ago.””

I read it.

And my heart stopped.

It was a life insurance policy.

With Marcus listed as the owner.

But the beneficiary…

was not me.

It wasn’t Ethan.

It was Chloe.

I felt cold.

Even Chloe looked shocked when she saw the copy later.

“I didn’t know about this,” she said.

I believed her.

For once.

Because the look on her face wasn’t arrogance.

It was betrayal.

“You were going to marry a man who planned everything behind your back,” I told her.

She looked down.

“I know.””

A strange silence formed between us.

Two women.

Both hurt by the same man.

Just in different ways.

Marcus called that evening.

I almost didn’t answer.

But I did.

“Linda.””

His voice sounded different.

Smaller.

“What do you want?””

“I need to talk.””

“No.””

A pause.

Then:

“Please.””

I looked at Ethan.

He nodded.

Not because he trusted Marcus.

Because he trusted me.

“Talk.””

Marcus exhaled.

“I know you found everything.””

“Yes.””

“I can explain.””

I closed my eyes.

“You always say that.””

“Because I can.””

“No, Marcus.””

My voice shook.

“You explain after you get caught.””

Silence.

Then he said:

“I made mistakes.””

I almost smiled.

Everyone’s favorite word.

Mistakes.

“I was scared.””

“Of what?””

“Losing everything.””

I looked around my home.

The home he tried to take.

“You were afraid of losing everything, so you tried to take everything from me?””

He didn’t answer.

That was the first honest thing he had done in years.

Then his voice changed.

“Linda, there’s something you don’t understand.””

I waited.

“Daniel betrayed me.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“He wasn’t helping me.””

A chill moved through me.

“What are you saying?””

Marcus lowered his voice.

“I thought I was controlling the situation.””

A pause.

“But Daniel was controlling me.””

I sat up.

“What does that mean?””

“I didn’t know until today.””

His breathing became uneven.

“Linda…”

“What?””

“There’s a reason I was desperate to sell the house.””

My hand tightened around the phone.

“Why?””

His answer came quietly.

“Because Daniel owns something that can destroy all of us.””

I stood.

“What did you do, Marcus?””

A long silence.

Then he said:

“I didn’t betray you first.””

My heart raced.

“What are you talking about?””

Marcus whispered:

“The person who started this entire plan…”

A pause.

“…was someone in our family.””

May you like

The line went silent.

And then the call ended.
