Chapter 9 - The Confession of Vanessa Quinn

The boardroom doors opened once more, and two private investigators walked inside.

Between them walked Vanessa Quinn.

She was no longer wearing the emerald gown or the diamond necklace she had paraded at the Meridian Gala.

She wore an oversized gray trench coat, flat shoes, and oversized sunglasses that failed to hide the deep purple circles under her eyes.

When she saw Dominic, she stopped in her tracks, her lips curling into an expression of raw contempt.

"Vanessa?" Dominic whispered, taking a step toward her.

"Did they threaten you?"

"Tell them what we agreed on!"

"Tell them the PR strategy was a joint venture!"

Vanessa pulled a leather-bound folder from beneath her coat and dropped it onto the conference table directly in front of Evelyn.

"I don't owe you anything, Dominic," Vanessa said, her voice filled with pure venom.

"Mrs. Mercer, that folder contains the complete digital backups of Dominic’s private communications."

"It details the three offshore shell companies he created in Panama to siphon four million dollars from the company’s marketing budget."

"It includes his communications with the city zoning commissioners, where he attempted to bribe them regarding the environmental permits for the south canal."

Dominic’s breath hitched, his entire body turning completely cold.

"You recorded my private files?" he gasped, his voice cracking into a high-pitched squeak.

"You betrayed me?"

Vanessa turned to face him, her eyes burning with pure, uncut hatred.

"You told me that if I helped you replace Evelyn, you would make me a thirty-percent equity partner in Vale Holdings!"

"You told me she was a brainless socialite who didn't even know how to balance a checkbook!"

"You used me as an accessory to stroke your pathetic ego, Dominic!"

"Did you really think I loved you?"

"Did you really believe a thirty-year-old marketing executive fell in love with a narcissistic, aging bully who couldn't even keep his own marriage alive?"

"I was using you to climb the corporate ladder."

"And the second I realized the ladder was resting against a burning building, I called Mrs. Mercer’s attorneys."

Evelyn picked up the leather folder, opening it and glancing briefly at the documented wire transfers.

She closed the folder with a quiet snap that sounded like a coffin lid shutting.

"Thank you, Miss Quinn," Evelyn said smoothly.

"Your cooperation with our legal team has been noted."

"Under the terms of your whistleblower agreement, the Mercer Trust will decline to pursue civil fraud charges against you personally."

Vanessa let out a long, ragged exhale of relief, her shoulders slumping.

"However," Evelyn continued, her voice turning sharp as a razor, "your credentials with the Public Relations Society of America have been revoked."

"Your name has been submitted to the ethical regulatory board."

"You will never work in corporate communications in the state of Illinois again."

"Take your severance of ten thousand dollars and leave this city."

Vanessa blinked, tears forming in the corners of her eyes, but she knew better than to argue.

She bowed her head, whispered a choked "Thank you, Mrs. Mercer," and hurried out of the boardroom without looking at Dominic once.

Dominic stood in the center of the vast room, completely stripped of every ally, every dollar, and every shred of pride he had ever possessed.

He fell to his knees on the plush corporate carpet, his hands trembling as he looked up at Evelyn.

"Evelyn... please," he wept, openly sobbing like a broken child.

"I made a mistake."

"I was blind."

"The pressure of the company, the merger... it drove me crazy."

"I forgot who was truly there for me."

"I forgot who saved me."

"We can start over."

"We don't need the gala, we don't need the press."

"I’ll resign as CEO."

"I’ll let you run everything."

"Just please... don't leave me with nothing."

"Don't throw me out like this."

Evelyn walked slowly around the table, her heels clicking rhythmically on the hardwood border.

She stopped three feet from where he knelt in the dirt of his own making.

She looked down at him, and for the first time, Dominic saw what had been missing from her eyes on Saturday night.

There was no anger left.

There was no pain.

There was only the absolute, chilling void of total indifference.

"On Saturday night, Dominic, you looked at me and said that I didn't have the spine to survive at the top."

"You told me that life required a certain kind of woman."

"You were right."

"It requires a woman who doesn't need to shout to be feared."

"It requires a woman who builds empires in silence while fools brag in public."

She turned her back on him, walking toward the grand floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the Chicago River.

"Arthur," Evelyn said quietly.

"Yes, Mrs. Mercer?"

"Have the federal marshals escort Mr. Vale out of the building."

"If he ever sets foot on Mercer property again, have him arrested immediately."

Dominic reached out, his fingers desperately grazing the hem of her trousers.

"Evelyn! Please! Look at me!"

Two armed federal marshals grabbed Dominic beneath his armpits, hauling him violently to his feet.

They dragged him backward out of the boardroom, his shoes squeaking across the polished marble floor.

His screams of desperation echoed down the empty corridor until the heavy mahogany doors clicked shut, plunging the executive boardroom into blessed, peaceful silence.
