Chapter 17 - The Cryptic Ledger

In the subterranean vault of the Lake Geneva estate, Richard pried open a false brick beneath the wine cellar.

Inside lay an old steel lockbox covered in wax seal.

The seal bore the crest of the Mercer family: an anchor wrapped in silver chains.

Evelyn stepped forward, using her personal signet ring to depress the hidden latch.

The lock clicked open with a heavy metallic snap.

Inside were not stacks of cash or certificates of stock.

There was a hand-written leather journal, its pages brittle with time, accompanied by photographic negatives.

Evelyn opened the first page, recognizing her father’s bold, elegant handwriting.

"Richard, look at this date," Evelyn whispered.

"October 14, 1989."

Richard illuminated the page with his tactical light.

"The day the Vance Shipping tanker ran aground in Milwaukee," Richard noted grimly.

Evelyn read the lines aloud:

"'Arthur Davenport brought me the Vance proposal today.'"

"'Julian’s father demanded Mercer Maritime absorb their ecological liability in exchange for thirty percent harbor rights.'"

"'I refused.'"

"'They threatened my daughter.'"

"'They threatened Evelyn in her crib.'"

Evelyn’s breath hitched in her throat.

Her fingers traced the ink, cold fury surging through her veins like liquid fire.

"'To protect my child, I signed an option agreement under duress,'" the journal continued.

"'But Arthur Davenport does not know that the option was made contingent upon an escrow account deposited in Zurich.'"

"'An escrow account that can only be unlocked with my blood DNA and the Mercer sovereign key.'"

"'If Vance ever tries to claim my port, this ledger will expose that Vance Shipping intentionally scuttled their own vessel to claim twenty million in insurance.'"

Richard let out a low whistle of astonishment.

"Your father didn't leave a debt, Evelyn."

"He left a landmine."

"If this ledger goes to the Department of Justice, the entire Vance conglomerate will be dismantled under the RICO Act."

Before Evelyn could speak, her satellite communicator flashed green.

Her tactical security commander in Texas appeared on the encrypted screen.

"Mrs. Mercer, we have intercepted the target vehicle outside Denison, Texas."

"Helena Vance and her operatives are detained."

"Vanessa Quinn is unharmed."

"We secured the three flash drives Dominic gave her."

Evelyn stood tall in the dim vault, her eyes gleaming with absolute, unyielding power.

"Bring Vanessa and the drives directly to the Chicago penthouse," Evelyn commanded.

"And inform the Governor’s office that the signing ceremony is back on schedule."

"We are going to hold it tomorrow noon at the Chicago Cultural Center."

"Invite Julian Vance personally."

"Tell him Evelyn Mercer has prepared his inheritance."
