Chapter 2 - The Red Carpet of the Meridian

The line of black town cars stretched four blocks down Michigan Avenue, flashing hazard lights in the swirling blizzard.

Crowds of photographers and private security personnel flanked the exterior of the historic Drake Hotel.

Flashes popped through the falling snow, illuminating the diamonds, bespoke velvet capes, and tailored furs of the world’s elite.

Dominic Vale stepped out of his black Maybach, his posture radiating unyielding authority and triumph.

Beside him, Vanessa Quinn emerged into the cold air, clinging tightly to his arm in an emerald-green slit gown.

She smiled with ravenous delight at the wall of cameras, turning her head so the press could capture every diamond on her throat.

Dominic leaned down to whisper in her ear, his lips curving into a smug, triumphant grin.

"Welcome to the inner circle, Vanessa."

"Tomorrow morning, Vale Holdings will announce the municipal shipping merger."

"Every camera in the city will print your face on the front page of the business section."

Vanessa tilted her head back, laughing softly, her eyes gleaming with intoxicating ambition.

"Evelyn must be sobbing in her tea right now, Dominic."

"Did she cry when you handed her the papers?"

Dominic sneered as he escorted her past the red velvet ropes toward the grand marble steps.

"She didn't make a sound."

"She doesn't have the spine for tears, let alone a fight."

"She’ll sign the agreement, pack her small life, and disappear into Lake Forest where she belongs."

"I wasted eight years carrying dead weight."

Inside the hotel’s opulent gold-leaf lobby, the guest list was guarded by four private security officers wearing earpieces.

Dominic stepped forward, flashing his platinum credential with practiced arrogance.

"Dominic Vale, Vale Holdings, table three in the main rotunda."

The head usher nodded respectfully, checking his tablet before looking up.

"Welcome, Mr. Vale."

"And your guest?"

"Vanessa Quinn, Vice President of Strategic Public Affairs for Vale Holdings," Dominic announced loudly enough for the surrounding executives to hear.

Vanessa offered an elegant nod, her chest puffing up with pride.

Behind them, whispers fluttered through the gathering crowd like dry leaves in the wind.

"Is that Dominic Vale?"

"Where is his wife?"

"Where is Evelyn?"

"Did he bring his public relations director to the Meridian?"

Dominic heard the whispers and welcomed them; to him, controversy was simply another form of leverage.

He wanted the city to see that he answered to no one, that he broke rules without consequence.

Suddenly, a low, collective gasp rippled through the exterior terrace, cutting through the chatter of the lobby.

The flashes outside ceased their steady rhythm and exploded into a violent, blinding frenzy of white light.

Even the armed guards at the main glass entrance stepped aside, snapping to rigid attention.

Dominic frowned, glancing back toward the rotating doors with irritation at having his entrance eclipsed.

"Who is arriving?" Vanessa asked, standing on her tiptoes to peer over Dominic’s broad shoulder.

"The Mayor was already seated an hour ago."

A midnight-black vintage Rolls-Royce Phantom IV pulled up directly beneath the hotel portico.

The vehicle did not carry city plates or corporate decals; it bore the golden serpent insignia on its polished hubcaps.

A personal chauffeur wearing white gloves stepped into the freezing snow and opened the rear door.

First came the heel of a hand-crafted Italian stiletto, dark sapphire leather encrusted with diamonds.

Then, a woman stepped into the flashing lights, moving with a poise so lethal the entire lobby fell dead silent.

Her gown flowed behind her like liquid midnight, clinging to an immaculate silhouette before cascading into a subtle train.

Her dark hair was swept into an intricate updo, exposing an alabaster throat adorned with a single teardrop sapphire necklace.

It was a piece of jewelry that belonged in an international museum, not a private collection.

Dominic stopped breathing, his entire body locking into place as if struck by lightning.

His drink nearly slipped from his fingers, his jaw dropping in absolute, paralyzing disbelief.

"No," Dominic muttered under his breath, his knuckles turning dead white.

"That’s impossible."

Vanessa narrowed her eyes, squinting past the flashing cameras with mounting fury.

"Who is that woman?"

"Why are the reporters losing their minds?"

The woman turned toward the cameras, lifting her chin with an aura of untouchable royalty.

The emerald eyes that met the lenses were unmistakable.

It was Evelyn.

She carried neither hesitation nor sorrow; she moved like a monarch walking back into her ancestral home.

Behind her, stepping out of the same Rolls-Royce, was an older gentleman with silver hair, an impeccably cut tuxedo, and an ebony cane with an ivory crest.

The entire lobby seemed to tilt on its axis.

"My God," whispered Julian Vance, one of Chicago’s most powerful federal judges, who was standing beside Dominic.

"Is that... Richard Mercer?"

"Mercer hasn't attended a public gala in twelve years."

The security guards at the door bowed their heads with genuine reverence as Richard Mercer stepped inside.

He placed his hand gently behind Evelyn’s back, guiding her through the crowd with absolute deference.

Evelyn did not look left or right; her gaze swept the room with calm, terrifying superiority.

When her eyes landed on Dominic Vale, she did not flinch, she did not scowl, and she did not look away.

She simply smiled a small, devastating smile that promised absolute ruin.
