Chapter 3 - The Ghost of the Mercer Dynasty

The grand ballroom of the Drake Hotel was illuminated by three massive crystal chandeliers imported from nineteenth-century Vienna.
Over four hundred of Chicago’s most entrenched power brokers stood frozen in place, watching the procession.
Dominic stood paralyzed near the champagne fountain, his heart pounding in his ears like a war drum.
Vanessa’s hand dug painfully into his forearm, her manicured nails biting through his Brioni wool.
"Dominic, what is going on?" she hissed, panic cracking her smooth corporate exterior.
"You said she was nobody."
"You said she had no connections, no family, and no money of her own."
"Why is she on the arm of Richard Mercer?"
Dominic couldn't answer her; the blood had drained completely from his face, leaving him pale and sick.
He had spent fifteen years trying to get a single twenty-minute meeting with Richard Mercer.
He had sent gifts, hired high-priced lobbyists, and made massive donations to Mercer’s charities, all of which had been returned without a note.
Mercer controlled the Great Lakes maritime transit rights, the commercial shipping lanes, and the key municipal real estate along the river.
Without Mercer’s signature, Dominic’s multi-billion-dollar logistics merger was nothing more than ink on worthless paper.
And now, the reclusive phantom of Chicago was escorting the woman Dominic had thrown out of his house less than three hours ago.
Richard Mercer led Evelyn straight toward the center of the rotunda, where the city’s most distinguished figures parted like the sea.
Federal judges, state senators, and veteran hedge fund managers bowed their heads in respectful greetings as they passed.
"Good evening, Richard," whispered Senator Montgomery, extending a trembling hand.
"It has been far too long."
"Good evening, Arthur," Richard replied in a low, gravelly baritone that commanded effortless obedience.
"Allow me to present Evelyn."
The senator’s eyes widened as he took Evelyn’s gloved hand, bowing slightly over her fingers.
"Evelyn... it is an absolute honor."
"We were devastated when your grandfather passed, but seeing you here... you are his living image."
Dominic stumbled forward two steps, breaking away from Vanessa’s grip as if drawn by a nightmare.
He couldn't accept what he was seeing; his mind rejected the reality of his own catastrophic mistake.
"Evelyn," Dominic blurted out, his voice cracking with desperation and confusion.
Several nearby guests turned their heads, their expressions filled with distaste at Dominic’s sudden lack of decorum.
Evelyn paused, slowly turning to face her husband.
Her expression was an unreadable mask of cold elegance, her green eyes piercing right through him.
"Yes, Mr. Vale?" she said, her voice smooth, melodious, and completely devoid of any familiarity.
The title hit Dominic like a physical slap across the cheek.
"What is this?" Dominic stammered, stepping closer, his chest heaving beneath his tailored tuxedo.
"What kind of sick game are you playing?"
"You belong in the penthouse packing your luggage."
"How did you get into this room?"
Before Evelyn could utter a syllable, Richard Mercer took half a step forward, planting the tip of his ebony cane firmly on the marble floor.
The sharp crack of wood meeting stone silenced the entire immediate circle.
Richard Mercer looked at Dominic Vale as if looking at a stain on an otherwise clean floor.
"You must be Dominic Vale," Richard said, his tone colder than the blizzard raging outside the windows.
"I am, sir," Dominic said reflexively, his instincts as a businessman overriding his shock for a split second.
"Mr. Mercer, it is an honor to finally meet you."
"There seems to be an enormous misunderstanding here."
"This woman is my wife, and she has no business being here tonight."
Richard Mercer smiled, a thin, razor-sharp curl of the lips that held no humor whatsoever.
"You are mistaken on two counts, young man."
"First, Evelyn has every business being here; she is the guest of honor, representing the Mercer Trust."
"Second, she is not merely your wife."
"She is the granddaughter and sole surviving heir of Thomas Vance Mercer."
Dominic’s breath hitched in his throat, his eyes bulging as the family tree fell into place with brutal clarity.
"Thomas Mercer was your father?" Dominic whispered, turning his gaze back to Evelyn in horror.
"Thomas Mercer was my grandfather," Evelyn answered, her voice ringing clearly across the quiet ballroom.
"When my parents died in a plane crash when I was ten, my grandfather raised me under his name."
"When I met you at that gallery benefit eight years ago, you were hungry, ambitious, and seemingly humble."
"My grandfather warned me that men who hunger for power often devour the people who love them."
"He put my entire multi-billion-dollar inheritance into a blind trust, instructing me to live an ordinary life for eight years."
"He told me that if you loved me for who I was, I could hand you the keys to the kingdom when the trust matured."
Evelyn stepped closer to Dominic, her emerald eyes glittering with devastating clarity.
"The eight-year mark was yesterday, Dominic."
"I was going to present you with the controlling shares of the Chicago Port Authority tonight."
"I was going to make you the most powerful maritime magnate on this continent."

She glanced at Vanessa, who stood five feet away, pale, trembling, and utterly humiliated.
"Instead, you traded an empire for cheap perfume and an empty suit."
