Chapter 18 - The Hostile Dawn

The morning sun broke over Lake Michigan, casting an amber glow across the Chicago skyline.

Yet beneath the golden dawn, a financial earthquake shook the city.

At seven o'clock sharp, Vance Capital initiated an aggressive, multi-billion-dollar short position against Mercer Logistics bonds.

Simultaneously, a breaking news banner swept across CNBC and Bloomberg:

"BREAKING: Imprisoned Ex-Husband Dominic Davenport Files Explosive Affidavit Accusing Sovereign Heir Evelyn Mercer of Massive Port Fraud."

The markets reacted instantly.

Speculative funds began dumping maritime shares.

Reporters swarmed the perimeter of the Mercer Plaza, their cameras pointed at every entering executive.

Inside her penthouse, Evelyn stood before the mirror, letting her stylist button the cuffs of her snow-white suit.

Her reflection revealed no panic, no hesitation, and no fear.

She wore a simple pearl necklace and her father’s gold signet ring on her index finger.

Vanessa Quinn sat on a velvet armchair in the corner of the suite, wrapped in a cashmere blanket, sipping warm tea.

Vanessa looked down, unable to meet Evelyn’s gaze.

"Dominic signed it," Vanessa murmured, her voice raw.

"He really hates you that much, doesn't he?"

Evelyn turned around, looking at the broken mistress with calm composure.

"Dominic doesn't hate me, Vanessa."

"He hates that he was never my equal."

"He thought that by humiliating me with you, he could steal the power he was too cowardly to earn."

Vanessa wiped a tear from her cheek.

"The drives are unlocked."

"Richard’s analysts found everything."

"Arthur Davenport’s wire receipts, the fake maritime registries, and Julian Vance’s direct payments to Dominic’s offshore accounts."

"You saved my life, Evelyn."

"Why did you do that after I insulted you at the Meridian?"

Evelyn walked over to Vanessa, stopping just inches away.

"Because a queen does not wage war against insects," Evelyn said softly.

"She eliminates the hand that unleashed them."

The penthouse doors opened, and Richard entered, holding a black leather briefcase.

"The Governor and the United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois have arrived at the Cultural Center, Evelyn."

"Julian Vance is already there with thirty reporters and his entire legal team."

"He believes you are walking into an ambush."

Evelyn picked up her leather gloves from the vanity.

"Then let us not keep Mr. Vance waiting."

"It is time to teach Chicago what happens when a predator mistakes patience for surrender."
