Chapter 9 - The Burning of the Fiori Estate and the Ultimatum

Three days later, the charred, smoldering ruins of the Fiori family’s private lakefront estate on the outskirts of Evanston cast an orange glow across the freezing waters of Lake Michigan.

Victor Fiori paced frantically across the marble patio of his secondary safehouse, slamming his fist onto a wrought-iron table so hard that his knuckles bled.

“What do you mean the hit squad didn't come back?!” Victor roared down the encrypted satellite phone into the ear of his lead lieutenant.

“They were ambushed, boss,” a terrified voice trembled through the speaker.

“Dante Moretti didn't just defend the hospital—he wiped out our entire northern cell in less than ten minutes. And... and Uncle Sal is in custody.”

Victor froze, the blood draining completely from his face as the terrifying weight of his impending destruction settled over him.

Before he could speak another word, the heavy security gates of the safehouse compound were violently smashed open by the battering ram of a massive armored truck.

Black SUVs poured into the courtyard in a synchronized tactical formation, their high-beam headlights blinding the security guards who dropped their weapons without firing a single shot.

Dante Moretti stepped out from the lead vehicle, wearing a black cashmere overcoat that billowed slightly in the icy wind.

He walked up the marble steps of the patio with the slow, measured cadence of an executioner approaching the guillotine.

Victor’s bodyguards tried to raise their rifles, but Carmine and a dozen elite Moretti enforcers had already pinned them in a lethal crossfire, their laser sights painting red dots across the guards' chests.

“Drop them,” Dante commanded softly, his voice cutting through the roaring wind like a knife.

Victor forced a trembling, desperate smile, reaching slowly inside his jacket as if trying to steady his nerves.

“Dante... we can talk about this,” Victor stammered, sweat beading on his forehead despite the freezing temperature.

“Salvatore gave us the municipal titles, we can split the redevelopment contracts fifty-fifty—we’re brothers in this city!”

Dante stopped two paces away from Victor, his dark eyes devoid of any human warmth or mercy.

“My father made a blood pact on Taylor Street twenty years ago,” Dante said, sliding a heavy, battered wooden shoeshine box onto the marble table between them.

“And tonight, Victor, I am finishing the ledger.”
