Chapter 6 - The Confession Under the Shadow of the Guillotine

Salvatore Moretti’s hand hovered for a fraction of a second over the polished brass handle of the suite door before he slowly let it drop back to his side.

The grandfatherly warmth that had defined his public persona for decades evaporated, leaving behind the hardened gaze of a man who had survived thirty years in the upper echelons of the Chicago mob.

“You always were too thorough for your own good, Dante,” Salvatore murmured, his voice losing its tremor and turning sharp, almost clinical.

He walked slowly toward the small seating area, unbuttoning his cashmere overcoat and taking a seat directly across from Dante without being invited.

“That old cobbler on Taylor Street was a stubborn fool who stood in the way of a twenty-million-dollar waterfront redevelopment project,” Salvatore continued, resting his elbows on his knees.

“Your father was too soft, blinded by some romantic notion of honor and neighborhood loyalty. I did what was necessary to secure the family’s financial dominance.”

“By forging documents, framing an innocent man, and breaking a sacred blood oath?” Dante asked, his voice deathly quiet as he stepped out from the shadow of the window.

“Honor doesn't pay the payroll, Dante, and it certainly doesn't keep the federal indictments away,” Salvatore retorted, his eyes flashing with defiance.

“You think you run this empire because you're feared? You run it because my investments and Fiori’s connections built the foundation you’re standing on.”

Before Salvatore could finish his sentence, the heavy oak door of the VIP suite burst open with a resounding crash.

Carmine Russo rushed into the room, his breathing heavy and his hand already gripping the black grip of his weapon beneath his suit jacket.

“Boss! We’ve got a massive breach on the perimeter,” Carmine barked urgently, casting a suspicious glare toward Salvatore.

“Fiori’s men just bypassed the security detail on the ground floor. They’re coming up the service elevator right now with automatic weapons.”

Dante didn't even flinch; his dark eyes locked onto his uncle with a terrifying clarity.

“So, the rat didn't just come to confess, did he?” Dante whispered, stepping so close to Salvatore that the older man could feel the raw fury radiating from his skin.

“You tipped off Victor Fiori the moment you saw that archival folder in my hand, didn't you?”

Salvatore didn't bother denying it; a cold, cynical smile crept back onto his weathered lips.

“If I go down, Dante, the entire Moretti syndicate goes down with me,” Salvatore hissed softly.

“Fiori is here to finish what we started twenty years ago—clean the slate, eliminate the girl, and leave you with nothing.”
