Chapter 5 - Unearthing the Forged Deed and the Traitor Within the Inner Circle

The private VIP penthouse suite at St. Jude’s Hospital smelled of expensive antiseptic, white lilies, and polished mahogany furniture.

Arthur Carter lay peacefully in a motorized medical bed, his breathing stabilized by an advanced respiratory machine while a steady saline drip nourished his withered veins.

Lily sat curled up in a massive leather armchair in the corner of the room, fast asleep beneath a cashmere blanket that Carmine had personally sourced from the hospital's executive lounge.

Dante Moretti stood by the floor-to-ceiling window overlooking the glittering Chicago skyline, holding a thick, leather-bound municipal archive folder that had just been delivered by courier.

The pages inside were crisp, yellowed with age, and stamped with official city seals from twenty-one years ago.

Dante turned the pages slowly, his dark eyes scanning the property transfer records, tax liens, and corporate shell company registrations associated with Carter Shoe Repair.

There it was on page forty-two: a property forfeiture notice signed by a corrupt municipal judge and countersigned by Victor Fiori’s late father, Marco Fiori.

But what made Dante’s blood run cold was not the Fiori signature at the bottom of the page.

It was the signature right beside it as a witness for the Moretti family acquisition division.

Salvatore Moretti—Dante’s own uncle, who currently served as the chief financial advisor and treasurer of the Moretti syndicate.

Dante stared at the looping, elegant handwriting of his uncle Salvatore, realizing with sickening clarity that the betrayal had not come from an external enemy.

It had come from inside his own house.

Uncle Sal had secretly conspired with the Fiori family twenty years ago to bankrupt Arthur Carter, evict him from his legally owned property, and pocket millions in kickbacks from municipal redevelopment funds.

The door to the VIP suite clicked open softly, and Salvatore Moretti stepped inside wearing an expensive cashmere overcoat, his silver hair neatly combed and a benevolent smile on his aged face.

“Dante, my boy, I heard a rumor you were spending hospital funds on a random street beggar,” Salvatore began, his voice warm and grandfatherly as he walked toward the bed.

Salvatore stopped instantly when he saw the cold, murderous glare Dante was giving him from across the moonlit room.

The leather folder remained resting heavily in Dante’s left hand, the open page displaying Salvatore’s signature clear as day under the fluorescent desk lamp.

“Uncle Sal,” Dante said, his voice dropping into a register so chilling that the older man instinctively took a half-step backward toward the door.

“Care to explain why your signature is on the fraudulent eviction notice that destroyed Arthur Carter's life twenty years ago?”

Salvatore’s benevolent smile vanished in an instant, replaced by a mask of cold, calculating survival instinct as he realized his decades-old secret had finally been dragged into the light.
