Chapter 8 - The Dying Wish of the Cobbler of Taylor Street

The heavy iron base of the IV pole struck the tactical enforcer squarely across the side of his helmet with a dull, sickening crunch.
The masked man staggered backward, losing his footing on the slick medical debris, and Carmine ended the threat with a single precise shot to the shoulder.
Silence descended upon the devastated VIP suite, broken only by the rhythmic, mechanical hiss of the respiratory monitor and the ragged, desperate breathing of Arthur Carter.
Dante kicked a discarded weapon away from the doorway, keeping his gun raised before rushing to the side of the hospital bed.
Arthur was coughing violently, dark crimson spots staining the pristine white linen as his frail body convulsed uncontrollably.
“Arthur! Stay still, don't move, the doctors are coming!” Dante urged, pressing the emergency call button on the wall with frantic desperation.
Arthur grabbed Dante’s tailored sleeve with terrifying grip strength, pulling the younger man’s face down close to his lips.
“Listen to me... Dante...” Arthur wheezed, his milky eyes burning with a fierce, unnatural clarity.
“The records... they aren't just at the municipal archive... I kept the original master land title... hidden inside the double bottom... of the old shoeshine box.”
Dante stared into the old man’s eyes, the realization hitting him like a physical blow.
“The box Lily carries... that’s what Fiori has been searching for all these years,” Dante realized aloud.
“Yes...” Arthur whispered, a faint, peaceful smile touching his pale lips as his fingers slowly loosened their grip on Dante’s sleeve.
“Protect my girl... make them pay... for Taylor Street...”
The flat, unbroken tone of the heart monitor filled the room, a long, continuous note that signaled the end of an era.
Lily woke up instantly at the sound of the alarm, her small eyes widening in sheer terror as she saw the shattered door, the smoke lingering in the air, and the motionless figure of her grandfather in the bed.
“Grandpa?!” she screamed, scrambling out of the armchair and running toward the bed before Carmine gently scooped her up into his arms, shielding her face against his chest.

“Don't look, kiddo, close your eyes,” Carmine choked out, his own voice cracking as he turned away from the bed.
Salvatore Moretti watched the scene unfold from the corner, his face completely drained of color as he realized he had backed the losing side of a historic blood war.
