Chapter 8 - The House of Cards Collapses

Julian’s jaw dropped, his face turning an ashen gray that made him look twenty years older.

"Arrest?" Julian stammered, stepping backward until his thighs hit the heavy mahogany table.

"An arrest warrant for what? This is a civil dispute over an estate!"

"This is not a civil dispute, Mr. Vance," Special Agent Miller replied, stepping forward with a folder of signed criminal indictments.

"We are arresting you on seventeen counts of grand larceny, bank fraud, wire fraud, and identity theft."

"Over the last three years, you unlawfully forged the signature of Eleanor Vance on four commercial loan applications totaling six million dollars."

"You also submitted falsified balance sheets to First National Bank using forged collateral documents."

Julian gasped for air, his eyes darting frantically toward Arthur Campbell.

"Arthur! Did you report this?"

"Eleanor reported this, Julian," Arthur answered smoothly, crossing his arms over his chest.

"She delivered the complete forensic accounting audit to the Attorney General's office forty-eight hours before she passed away."

"She didn't want you arrested in her hospital room because she didn't want the spectacle to disrupt the other patients."

"She wanted you arrested right here, in front of the people you lied to."

Beside Julian, Chloe Bennett suddenly shrieked.

She stood up from her chair, backing away from Julian as if he were covered in the plague.

"Wait! Hold on!" Chloe shouted at the police officers, her hands flying into the air.

"I don't know anything about this!"

"I had nothing to do with his loans or his bank accounts!"

"Julian told me that money was his personal corporate bonus!"

Julian whipped his head around to stare at his mistress, pure shock and betrayal flashing across his features.

"Chloe, shut up!" Julian hissed.

"You know damn well where that money came from!"

"You asked for the Bellevue penthouse!"

"You picked out the furniture! You demanded the first-class tickets to Maui!"

"You shut up, Julian!" Chloe screamed back, her polished, glamorous facade completely shattering into hysterical rage.

"You lied to me!"

"You told me your mother was a multi-millionaire who begged you to take over the family fortune!"

"You told me you were divorcing this pathetic woman and buying us an estate in France!"

"You’re nothing but a fraud and a broke criminal!"

"Actually, Miss Bennett," Special Agent Miller interrupted, gesturing to the female officer standing by the door.

"Do not leave the room."

"We have a separate grand jury subpoena for you."

Chloe froze, her mouth agape.

"A... a subpoena for me?"

"The two-million-dollar penthouse in Bellevue registered under CB Luxuries was purchased using directly traced proceeds from grand larceny," Agent Miller explained calmly.

"As of eight o'clock this morning, the King County Superior Court has placed a federal civil asset forfeiture lien on the property."

"You have twenty-four hours to vacate the premises."

"Any assets removed from that home—including designer jewelry, vehicles, and luxury accessories purchased within the last twenty-four months—will be treated as interstate transport of stolen property."

Chloe let out a strangled, pathetic wail, dropping her alligator-skin handbag onto the carpet as the officer stepped toward her.

"No! That's my bag! That's my apartment!" she cried, tears ruining her heavy mascara.

"Julian, do something! You promised me I would be protected!"

Julian didn't even look at her.

The reality of his destruction had finally crashed through his thick skull.

He turned back toward me, dropping to his knees on the carpet, entirely abandoning whatever shred of dignity he had left.

The officers hesitated for a brief second as Julian crawled across the floor toward where I sat.

"Nora..." he pleaded, his voice breaking into raw, choking sobs.

"Nora, please."

"You loved me."

"We were together for eighteen years."

"I made terrible, horrific mistakes, I admit it!"

"The stress of the business... the pressure from Mom... it broke my judgment!"

"Please, Nora, call the prosecutor."

"Tell them it was a family misunderstanding."

"Sign the waiver on the loans."

"You control the company now, you can drop the charges with a single stroke of your pen!"

I looked down at the man who had abandoned his mother on her deathbed to drink champagne in Maui.

I remembered the sound of the ocean waves through the speakerphone.

I remembered Chloe’s cruel laugh echoing through Eleanor’s final room.

I remembered Eleanor’s trembling, bruised fingers pressing the silver key into my palm.

"When I called you on Tuesday morning, Julian," I said, my voice quiet, clear, and unyielding, "I wasn't calling to ask for your money."

"I was calling to give you the chance to hold your mother’s hand one last time."

"I was giving you the chance to be a human being."

"You traded your mother’s dying breath for a vacation with a woman who just sold you out to the police in under thirty seconds."

"Nora, please!" Julian cried, real tears finally streaming down his pale cheeks.

"Don't do this to me! I’ll go to prison!"

"You did this to yourself, Julian," I said softly.

"Officer, please remove this man from my company boardroom."

May you like

The officers stepped forward, pulled Julian’s arms behind his back, and snapped the cold steel handcuffs around his wrists.

The metallic click of the cuffs was the sweetest, most final sound I had ever heard.
