Chapter 15 - The Tape’s Final Confession

Arthur retrieved Eleanor’s vintage cassette recorder from the library credenza and set it beside the roaring fire.

He pushed the black plastic tape into the deck and pressed the play button with a deliberate, firm click.

The hiss of magnetic tape filled the parlor, followed by the faint chime of grandfather clocks in the distance.

Then came Eleanor’s voice, raspy, fragile, yet filled with an undeniable, steely clarity.

"Today is October 14th, 2018," Eleanor spoke into the recorder, her breathing labored between phrases.

"If Gabriel Wright is listening to this, it means I have failed to live long enough to hand him this truth in person.

Gabriel, your father loved you deeply.

He was blackmailed into entering Charles Vance’s laboratory because Charles threatened to frame him for industrial espionage.

When Malcolm threatened to go to the federal marshals with Charles's fraudulent marine patents, Charles sabotaged the brakes on Malcolm's Buick.

I found the maintenance receipts in Charles’s safe three months after the funeral.

I was terrified.

I was a woman in 1981 without an independent income, raising a child that wasn't legally mine under common law.

Charles swore that if I spoke a word, Julian would be put in an asylum and I would be left on the street.

So I waited.

I watched Charles rot from the inside until the stroke took his voice, and I spent twenty years moving Charles's illicit millions into secure escrow accounts.

Nora is not your enemy, Gabriel.

She was Julian’s victim just as we were Charles's victims.

The five million note belongs to you, plus forty years of compounding interest.

Take your father's share.

Leave the remainder of the estate to Nora so she can cleanse the ground that Charles poisoned."

The tape ended with a soft, mechanical click, leaving the parlor completely silent except for the crackle of burning cedar wood.

Gabriel sat motionless, staring down at his clenched fists.

May you like

Tears, unbidden and silent, slid down his cheeks, vanishing into the collar of his trench coat.

Before anyone could speak, the sudden shriek of screeching tires echoed outside the courtyard gates once more.
