Chapter 12 - Whispers in the Granite Bed

Arthur stepped into the room and immediately closed the double doors behind him, turning the brass deadbolt with practiced discretion.

He took off his reading glasses and looked down at the photograph lying between my trembling hands.

His expression did not morph into surprise; rather, an ancient, sorrowful resignation carved deep lines into his weathered forehead.

"You weren't supposed to find that letter unless the family trust faced a federal challenge," Arthur confessed softly, pulling the heavy velvet drapes across the southern window.

"You knew?" I demanded, the sting of betrayal flaring hot in my chest.

"I served Charles Vance for thirty years, Nora, and Eleanor for twenty more after Charles suffered his fatal stroke," Arthur replied, his voice barely louder than the hum of the ceiling fan.

"Charles was an aggressive industrialist, but he was sterile from an infection he contracted in the Navy.

To preserve the Vance lineage and secure the industrial empire against his rivals, an arrangement was made with Malcolm Wright, Charles's chief design engineer.

Malcolm provided the heir, and Charles provided Malcolm with twenty percent of the early shipping dividends under the table.

Julian was that child."

"Then why the secrecy?

Why did Eleanor give me the key and cast Julian aside if he was the only child she ever bore?"

"Because Malcolm Wright was murdered three nights before Julian turned ten," Arthur said, his eyes darkening with grim intensity.

"And the police records were quietly buried by the county prosecutor whom Charles had placed on the bench.

Eleanor spent four decades carrying the horrifying suspicion that her husband Charles arranged Malcolm's car accident.

She could not look at Julian without seeing both the innocent child she had raised and the monstrous greed of the family that bought him.

When Julian began mimicking his legal father’s worst cruelties toward you, Eleanor knew the cycle had to end."

I rose from the chair, the weight of the silver key hanging heavier than lead around my neck.

"The note says Malcolm had another son, Arthur.

A son who was cast out into poverty while Julian lived in luxury."

Arthur took a deep breath, looking toward the sunlit garden outside.

"His name is Gabriel Vance-Wright.
