Chapter 6 - Whispers Across Polished Mahogany

The morning of the will reading arrived under a torrential Pacific Northwest downpour.
The twentieth floor of Campbell, Vance & Sterling overlooked the stormy gray waters of Elliott Bay.
The executive boardroom was a shrine to old-money elegance: rich Honduran mahogany walls, leather armchairs, and floor-to-ceiling bookshelves lined with century-old law texts.
I sat on the far right side of the twenty-foot conference table, accompanied by Arthur Campbell and two senior forensic accountants.
Across the table sat Julian.
He had managed to borrow twenty thousand dollars from a shady business associate to pay for a luxury rental car and a fresh designer suit, attempting to rebuild his facade of bulletproof wealth.
Sitting directly beside him, dressed in an inappropriately revealing cream designer dress and towering stiletto heels, was Chloe Bennett.
She had applied thick makeup to hide the panic in her eyes, clutching an alligator-skin handbag that Julian had bought with stolen trust money.
"What is this woman doing here?" Arthur Campbell asked bluntly, staring at Chloe with open disgust.
"This is a confidential legal proceeding for the Vance estate."
Julian leaned back in his leather chair, crossing his legs and flashing a smug, arrogant grin.
"Chloe is my primary corporate partner and my personal representative, Arthur," Julian sneered.
"Since Nora has clearly suffered a nervous breakdown and locked me out of my own ancestral home, I brought someone who actually understands finance and governance."
"Let’s get this formality over with."
"I have three private equity acquisitions to finalize this afternoon, and I need access to the primary estate treasury by noon."
Chloe gave me a smug, triumphant smirk across the mahogany table.
"Yes, Arthur," Chloe chimed in, her voice dripping with artificial sweetness.
"Julian has been under tremendous stress dealing with this family tragedy."
"We want to ensure that all assets are transferred smoothly so Julian can assume full control of Vance Capital without interference from... outside parties."
I didn't utter a single syllable.
I simply looked at Chloe’s designer bag, knowing that every stitch of that leather had been cataloged in the fraud audit sitting right under my left elbow.
Arthur Campbell opened a thick black leather binder with deliberate slowness.
"Before we proceed to the formal reading of Eleanor Vance’s Last Will and Testament," Arthur began, his voice echoing authoritatively through the room, "I must remind all parties present that this session is being recorded for official probate record."
Arthur turned to a hidden control panel on the wall and flipped a switch.
A high-definition projection screen lowered from the ceiling at the head of the conference table.
Julian frowned, his arrogant posture stiffening slightly.
"What is that for?" Julian demanded.
"The will is on paper, Campbell. Read the document."
"Eleanor Vance anticipated that you would contest her written instructions, Julian," Arthur explained calmly.
"She therefore recorded an official holographic video testament forty-eight hours prior to her final hospitalization."
"It was witnessed by two independent magistrates, a board-certified neuropsychologist who confirmed her complete mental clarity, and myself."
Arthur picked up a small silver remote and pressed play.
The screen flickered to life.
The boardroom went dead silent.
There sat Eleanor Vance, wearing an elegant navy silk blouse and her signature silver chain around her neck.
Though she looked thin and frail, her eyes were razor-sharp, burning with an undeniable, terrifying clarity.
Julian visibly shrank back into his leather chair, his face losing every trace of color.
Chloe’s smug smile vanished into thin air.
"Hello, Julian," Eleanor’s recorded voice rang out through the boardroom speakers, rich, cultured, and devoid of warmth.
"If you are watching this video, it means my long, painful battle with illness has finally come to an end."
"And it means that you have finally returned from whatever cowardly corner of the world you escaped to while waiting for me to die."
Julian gripped the edges of the conference table so hard his knuckles turned stark white.
"Mother..." he whispered under his breath.
"Turn that off!" Julian suddenly shouted, slamming his hand onto the wood.
"Arthur, shut that off right now! This is emotional abuse! My mother was clearly medicated and manipulated!"
"Sit down, Julian," Arthur commanded, his voice booming with the thunder of a supreme judge.
"If you leave this room before the video concludes, you forfeit your legal right to contest the probate under Clause Nine of the Washington Estate Code."
May you like
Julian froze, trapped by his own desperate greed.
He slowly sank back down, trembling with rage, forced to stare into the eyes of the mother he had abandoned.
