Chapter 20 - The Whispering Shadows

Three weeks later.

The private wing of the Cantonal Hospital in Geneva was guarded around the clock by Swiss federal police and private security contractors.

Adrian Moretti had survived.

The bullet had missed his subclavian artery by three millimeters, shattering his shoulder and puncturing his left lung.

He lay in the hospital bed, hooked to banks of monitors, his face gaunt, his left arm immobilized in a heavy orthopedic brace.

The door opened silently.

Daniel Carter entered, setting a leather briefcase onto the bedside table.

Adrian turned his head slowly, the pain medication making his movements sluggish.

"Did she fly back to England?" Adrian asked, his voice barely above a whisper.

"No," Daniel replied evenly.

"She didn't return to Cambridge."

Adrian’s heart monitor beeped slightly faster.

"Where is she?"

"She accepted an appointment as the Director of the Advanced Theoretical Institute at Princeton," Daniel said.

"She is moving back to the United States."

"Back to America..." Adrian murmured, a flicker of light returning to his hollow eyes.

"She’s coming home."

"She is not coming home to you, Adrian," Daniel cut him down immediately.

"Princeton is eight hundred miles from Chicago."

"She has barred you from entering the campus through an emergency restraining order filed in the Third Circuit Court."

"If you come within one thousand feet of her, you will be arrested on federal stalking charges."

Adrian looked down at his scarred, bandaged hands.

"It doesn't matter," Adrian said softly.

"She is breathing the same air."

"She is under the same sky."

"That is enough."

"Adrian," Daniel said, his voice dropping into a register of deadly, uncharacteristic gravity.

"You need to look at what we recovered from Matteo Castiglione’s personal encrypted drive."

Daniel opened the briefcase and slid a single manila folder onto the bed tray.

Adrian frowned, using his good right hand to open the clasp.

Inside was not a target list.

Inside was a series of bank transfers originating from an account in the Cayman Islands, dated over the last eighteen months.

The recipient of the payments was not a mafia Don.

It was an offshore account registered to a private medical facility in Switzerland.

Attached was a recent surveillance photograph.

Adrian’s breath caught in his throat.

The photograph showed a woman stepping out of a private clinic in Zurich, wearing dark sunglasses, her blonde hair cut short, her face altered slightly by surgical reconstruction.

Beside her stood Vincent Moretti—Adrian’s estranged, illegitimate half-brother who had vanished five years ago after being cast out of the family syndicate.

And the woman holding Vincent’s arm, smiling with cold, predatory triumph, was Sophia Vance.

"Sophia didn't drown in the lake after the crossfire in Chicago," Daniel said, his knuckles whitening as he gripped the edge of the bed.

"Vincent pulled her out."

"They faked her death."

"And for two years, Sophia has been feeding the Castiglione family every single encrypted code to your personal holdings."

"She wasn't trying to destroy your empire, Adrian."

"She was manipulating the Castigliones into hunting Claire, knowing you would abandon Chicago and throw your life away to protect her."

Adrian stared at the photograph, his pulse monitor spiking into an alarm rhythm.

"Vincent..." Adrian rasped, the realization hitting him like a physical blow.

"Vincent wanted Chicago."

"And Sophia wanted Claire dead," Daniel finished.

"And right now, while you are lying in a Swiss hospital bed with half your lung missing and your syndicate destabilized..."

Daniel paused, leaning over the bed, his voice trembling with genuine dread.

"...Claire Bennett has just landed at Newark Liberty International Airport."

"Alone."

"And Vincent Moretti’s private charter landed in New Jersey forty minutes before hers."

Adrian ripped the IV lines out of his arm, the heart monitor shrieking a continuous, piercing tone as blood sprayed across the white hospital sheets.

"Get the plane ready," Adrian roared, ignoring the tearing agony in his shattered chest.

"Get the plane ready right now!"

Across the ocean, inside the bustling international terminal at Newark, Claire Bennett pulled her carry-on suitcase through the crowd.

The cold American winter air greeted her as she walked toward the curbside pickup lane.

A sleek black Lincoln town car pulled up to the curb.

The rear window rolled down.

Claire stopped, reaching into her purse for her phone to check her university ride confirmation.

Before she could dial, a young woman in an expensive trench coat stepped out of the passenger side, pulling down her dark sunglasses.

A chilling, familiar smile spread across Sophia Vance’s surgically altered face.

"Welcome home, Claire," Sophia whispered, resting a gloved hand casually over the handle of a concealed weapon beneath her coat.

"Did you really think the fairy tale ended when you ran away?"
