Chapter 17 - The Confrontation at Lake Geneva

The private ante-room behind the grand auditorium was silent save for the muffled roar of the crowd beyond the velvet curtains.

The door clicked shut.

Adrian Moretti stood ten feet from Claire.

He wore a black bespoke suit, but he carried no weapon.

His face was hollow, shadows deep beneath his eyes, and a faint smear of dried blood stained the cuff of his white shirt—remnants of Surrey that he had failed to wash away completely.

He looked at her, and for three full seconds, Adrian forgot how to breathe.

She was breathtaking.

She was radiant.

And she looked at him with the precise, detached curiosity one might afford an insect pressed beneath a microscope slide.

"Claire," Adrian’s voice cracked, sounding like dry leaves scraped across pavement.

"You have five minutes, Mr. Moretti," Claire said, checking the diamond-less silver watch on her wrist.

"Before I step onto the international stage."

Adrian winced visibly at the formality of *Mr. Moretti*.

"I took care of Surrey," Adrian blurted out, taking a frantic half-step toward her before catching himself and halting.

"Salvatore Castiglione will never touch you again."

"His family is broken."

"I dismantled their networks."

"You are safe."

Claire let out a short, quiet laugh that sounded like cracking ice.

"Safe?" she echoed.

"Safe from whom, Adrian?"

"From the monsters you invited into my world?"

"I survived twenty-seven years without a single bodyguard, without a single bullet fired near my head."

"The only time my life has ever been in danger is when my name was associated with yours."

"I was protecting you!" Adrian pleaded, his hands reaching out toward her, trembling with desperate need.

"I spent every second of the last two years thinking of you."

"Every morning I woke up in that empty house, choking on the air because you weren't there."

"I bought back every painting you ever admired."

"I planted the lavender you loved along the entire perimeter wall."

"I had the divorce papers shredded, Claire!"

Claire’s eyes narrowed, a razor-sharp flash of fury cutting through her calm facade.

"You did what?"

Adrian pulled a folded legal document from his breast pocket, his fingers shaking.

"I never filed them with the state registry," he confessed, tears finally breaking free and tracking down his hollow cheeks.

"You are still my wife under Illinois law."

"I couldn't let you go, Claire."

"I can't."

"If I let you go, there is nothing left of me but the blood on my hands."

Julian stepped forward, his fists clenched, but Claire held up a single hand, stopping Julian instantly.

Claire walked slowly toward Adrian.

Each click of her heels against the marble floor sounded like the cocking of a hammer.

She stopped six inches from him.

Adrian could smell her lavender soap.

It wasn't the expensive French perfume he used to buy her by the crate.

It was clean, simple, and entirely her own.

He looked down at her with pure, unadulterated adoration, ready to fall to his knees right there on the Swiss marble.

"Do you want to know what I did when I left your house, Adrian?" Claire asked in a gentle, melodic murmur.

Adrian nodded frantically, hungry for any crumb of her life.

"I took a bus to Boston," Claire whispered.

"I rented a room with mold on the ceiling and a shared bathroom down the hall."

"I ate instant noodles for dinner and washed my two shirts in the sink."

"And on that first night, sleeping on a mattress that smelled of cheap laundry soap, with not a single dollar to my name..."

She leaned in closer, her dark eyes piercing directly into the shattered core of his soul.

"...I slept for ten uninterrupted hours."

"It was the first time in five years that I didn't wake up feeling like a corpse waiting for a burial."

Adrian’s breath hitched in his throat.

"Claire... please..."

"You didn't shred those divorce papers to save me, Adrian," Claire said, her voice dropping to a deadly, lethal stillness.

"You shredded them because you are a pathetic, cowardly little boy who cannot bear the thought that a woman outgrew your cage."

She reached out, plucked the legal document from his trembling hand, and didn't even look at it.

With two fluid, deliberate motions, Claire ripped the heavy parchment in half, then in quarters, then let the pieces flutter to the polished floor between their polished shoes.

"In twenty minutes, I will announce the creation of an international scientific coalition," Claire said coldly.

"And on live television, I will formally petition the International Court of Justice to declare my complete legal and civil dissolution from you and your criminal empire."

"You have no wife, Adrian Moretti."

"You only have the ashes of what you burned."
