Chapter 18 - The Ambush on the Promontory

Adrian stood paralyzed as Claire turned her back on him and walked toward the grand stage doors.

Julian gave Adrian one final, contemptuous look before following her.

The doors swung shut, cutting off the golden light of the auditorium.

Daniel stepped into the ante-room, his face grim.

"Adrian," Daniel said urgently.

"We have a catastrophic problem."

Adrian didn't move.

He was staring down at the four torn pieces of white paper resting on the floor.

His knees felt weak, his chest hollowed out as if his lungs had collapsed.

"She tore it," Adrian whispered blindly.

"She didn't even read it."

"Adrian! Listen to me!" Daniel grabbed Adrian’s shoulders and shook him violently.

"Matteo Castiglione wasn't in Surrey!"

Adrian’s eyes slowly cleared, the mafia commander fighting its way through the fog of utter heartbreak.

"What?"

"Salvatore sent his son directly to Switzerland two days ago," Daniel reported rapidly, pulling out a tactical radio.

"They knew you would follow Claire here."

"Surrey was a sacrificial distraction to lure you out of your Chicago fortress."

"Matteo has thirty local Swiss contractors stationed around the perimeter of the Palais des Nations."

"They aren't going after Claire in the auditorium."

"They’re waiting for the motorcade to exit toward Geneva Airport."

"They intend to assassinate both of you on the alpine mountain pass."

Adrian’s mind snapped shut with terrifying clarity.

The heartbreak did not vanish—it hardened into pure, apocalyptic rage.

"Where is Claire’s departure route?"

"She booked a standard commercial diplomatic transport arranged by the university," Daniel said.

"No armored glass."

"No armed escorts."

"They leave in fifteen minutes through the south gate."

"Mobilize every unit we have in Switzerland," Adrian commanded, drawing his backup weapon from his ankle holster and checking the chamber.

"Get the heavy Mercedes."

"We run point on her convoy."

"Adrian, if we engage in a firefight near the UN perimeter, the Swiss federal tactical police will shoot to kill," Daniel warned.

"Then let them shoot me," Adrian snarled, his eyes burning with madness.

"She will reach that airport alive, even if I have to pave the highway with my own flesh."

Twenty minutes later, the blizzard had intensified over Lake Geneva.

Claire sat in the back of the university sedan, Julian beside her, watching the blinding white snow swirl against the windows.

The keynote had been a triumph.

Her voice had echoed across global networks, her research hailed as a historic breakthrough in theoretical physics.

She had mentioned no names.

She had given no underworld king the honor of being acknowledged.

Her victory had been absolute.

"Are you alright, Claire?" Julian asked softly, watching her pale profile.

"I am clean, Julian," Claire said, looking at her bare fingers.

"For the first time in seven years, I am completely clean."

The sedan began its descent along the winding, two-lane mountain road leading away from the city center toward the private terminal.

On the right, a sheer rock wall rose into the mist; on the left, a five-hundred-foot drop fell toward the freezing waters of the lake.

Suddenly, a heavy black commercial dump truck roared out of a hidden logging trail, slamming directly into the front escort police cruiser, sending it spinning into the guardrail in a shower of sparks and crumpled steel.

"Ambush!" the driver screamed, slamming on the brakes.

Behind them, two dark SUVs skidded across the icy asphalt, blocking any retreat.

Men in tactical gear poured out of the vehicles, raising automatic rifles.

"Get down!" Julian yelled, throwing his arm over Claire and pushing her onto the floorboard.

Before the hitmen could open fire on Claire’s sedan, the deafening roar of a modified V12 engine tore through the storm.

Adrian’s armored Mercedes smashed through the tree line at ninety miles per hour, barreling directly between the lead shooters and Claire’s vehicle.

The impact was catastrophic.

Metal screeched against metal as Adrian’s vehicle broadsided the first SUV, crushing the chassis and shielding Claire’s sedan from the incoming hail of bullets.

Automatic gunfire erupted instantly, stitching across the armored glass of Adrian’s car in webbed white fractures.

Adrian kicked open the driver’s side door, firing with lethal, terrifying precision through the blizzard.

Three mercenaries dropped instantly.

Daniel leaned out the passenger window, laying down heavy covering fire with an automatic rifle.

"Drive!" Adrian screamed through the howling wind, his eyes locking onto Claire’s driver through the cracked windshield.

"Turn the car around and drive down the embankment!"

A high-caliber sniper round from the ridgeline cracked through the air.

The bullet pierced the upper hinge of the Mercedes door, ricocheting downward.

Adrian saw the red laser dot dance across the glass of Claire’s sedan—aimed directly at her head as she struggled to push Julian off her.

Without a second of hesitation, without a thought for his empire, his billions, or his survival, Adrian Moretti threw himself across the hood of Claire’s car.

The rifle cracked a second time.

The heavy 7.62mm round struck Adrian squarely in the left shoulder blade, tearing through muscle and bone, exiting through his collarbone in a violent spray of crimson that coated the sedan’s windshield.

Adrian fell heavily against the hood, his blood smearing down the cold glass right before Claire’s horrified eyes.
