Chapter 15 - The Coldest Morning

Dawn broke over London through a sheet of charcoal clouds.

In a secure, heavily fortified penthouse overlooking the Thames, Adrian Moretti paced the length of the slate terrace.

He was drenched in sweat beneath his unbuttoned dress shirt.

His eyes were bloodshot, rimmed with dark circles of sheer, unadulterated terror.

When the elevator doors parted, Daniel walked in alone.

Adrian crossed the room in three violent strides, grabbing Daniel by the lapels of his jacket.

"Where is she?" Adrian roared, his voice shaking with a hysteria no man in Chicago had ever witnessed.

"Is she safe?"

"Did they touch her?"

"Did Salvatore’s men lay a single hand on her?"

"She is completely unhurt, Adrian," Daniel said firmly, gently removing Adrian’s hands from his chest.

"She took down two of Castiglione’s extraction team by herself with a laboratory wrench and chemical solvents before we even breached the room."

Adrian froze.

A bizarre, fractured expression crossed his face—a mixture of awe, heartbreak, and overwhelming guilt.

"She fought them," Adrian breathed, his shoulders slumping.

"She didn't need us, Adrian," Daniel said quietly.

"She needed you to never have brought your world to her doorstep."

Adrian turned away, walking toward the terrace railing.

He looked out over the gray sprawl of London.

"Did she ask for me?"

Daniel paused.

He knew the truth would gut the man standing before him, but Daniel had decided long ago that coddling Adrian’s delusions had been the primary catalyst for Claire’s destruction.

"She said that if you set foot near her college, she will summon every law enforcement agency in Great Britain."

"She called you her hostage-taker, Adrian."

"She said your shadow brought those wolves into her life."

Adrian closed his eyes.

A dry, hollow sob tore through his throat, muffled against his clenched fist.

"I dismantled the Chicago port lines," Adrian whispered into the wind.

"I severed our distribution treaties with the cartel."

"I gave Salvatore’s family seventy percent of our trucking routes last year just to buy complete peace so I could step away."

"Salvatore doesn't care about your trucking routes, Adrian," Daniel said coldly.

"Salvatore saw a king who abandoned his armor for a woman who doesn't want him back."

"In our world, an exposed heart is an invitation to an execution."

Adrian turned back around.

The grief that had crippled him for two years seemed to suddenly crystallize into something terrifyingly familiar.

The fragile, broken husband vanished.

The monster who had conquered the Chicago underworld at twenty-seven resurfaced behind his hazel eyes, icy and merciless.

"Where is Salvatore staying?" Adrian asked.

His tone had dropped three octaves, flat and dead.

"Surrey," Daniel answered cautiously.

"A private country manor."

"He has twenty-five armed men stationed on the perimeter."

"Call the liaison in Belfast," Adrian commanded, slipping on his tailored overcoat.

"Bring twelve tactical breachers."

"No suppressors this time."

"No discreet negotiations."

"Adrian," Daniel warned, "this is British soil."

"If you turn Surrey into a warzone, MI5 will hunt you to the borders."

"Let them hunt," Adrian snapped, loading a blackened Sig Sauer with hollow-point rounds.

"Salvatore Castiglione thought he could use my wife as a bargaining chip."

"I am going to show him what happens to a man who touches the only sacred thing I have left in this miserable world."

Meanwhile, inside a private conference room at the British Council in London, Claire sat across from Julian Hayes.

A high-ranking university administrator stood near the doorway, wringing his hands nervously.

"Dr. Bennett, Scotland Yard is offering you a protective detail," Julian said gently.

Claire looked at her hands.

Her knuckles were bruised from the struggle the night before, but she had refused an ice pack.

"Scotland Yard cannot protect me from Adrian Moretti's universe, Julian," Claire said calmly.

"The only way to end this is to remove the prize."

Julian looked puzzled.

"What prize?"

"Salvatore Castiglione doesn't want me dead," Claire explained, her analytical mind mapping out the battlefield with cold precision.

"He wants Adrian to bleed his empire to save me."

"And Adrian is arrogant enough to burn half of England down to prove he can protect me."

Claire stood up, straightening her blazer.

"Julian, where is the European Astrophysics Consortium hosting the annual summit tomorrow?"

Julian blinked.

"Geneva."

"At the Palais des Nations."

"Book two tickets on the evening Eurostar to Switzerland," Claire commanded.

"Claire, you're walking into an international diplomatic zone in the middle of a mafia crossfire!"

"Precisely," Claire said, her eyes flashing with diamond-hard resolve.

"The Palais des Nations has international sovereign protection."

May you like

"Neither Salvatore’s thugs nor Adrian’s hitmen can fire a single bullet inside those halls without triggering an international military response."

"And that," Claire added coldly, "is where I will look Adrian Moretti in the eye and publicly sign away every legal claim to his name, his trust, and his protection."
