Chapter 14 - The Fracture Point

The two men moved through the rows of laboratory benches with mechanical efficiency.

They were dressed in civilian utility jackets, earpieces glowing faintly blue against their necks.

One held an unholstered pneumatic stun pistol; the other held a pair of reinforced zip-ties.

"Check the server alcove," the first man muttered in rapid Italian.

"Mr. Castiglione wants her contained before the campus security patrols the quad at midnight."

Claire heard the Italian dialect clearly.

Her years in Chicago had taught her the distinctions between the Sicilian dialects of the southern factions and the smooth, northern cadences of Salvatore Castiglione’s mercenaries.

She didn't wait to be cornered like a frightened domestic animal.

She was no longer the silent wife who wept in mahogany bedrooms while men discussed murder over dinner.

As the first operative turned the corner of the server rack, Claire struck.

With the full leverage of her body and the cold precision of an engineer who understood force vectors, she swung the steel wrench directly into the man’s knee.

The sickening crack of shattering patella echoed off the vaulted ceiling.

The operative let out an agonized roar and collapsed to the tiled floor, dropping his weapon.

Before the second man could swing his stun pistol around, Claire shoved a six-foot metal chemical cart straight into his chest.

Glass beakers containing concentrated hydrochloric acid and ethanol shattered across the linoleum between them.

A cloud of acrid, choking fumes billowed upward, triggering the ceiling fire alarms.

The piercing klaxons shrieked through the building, and overhead sprinklers instantly unleashed a torrential downpour of freezing water.

The second mercenary stumbled through the glass, his eyes burning from the chemical mist.

Claire lunged toward the fire exit, but a third man—one she hadn't heard—lunged through the secondary doorway and caught her by the arm.

His grip was iron.

"Stay quiet, signora, and you will live," he growled in her ear.

Claire drove the stiletto heel in her left hand directly into the instep of his tactical boot, then smashed her elbow backward into his throat.

The man choked, stumbling back, but managed to keep a fist tangled in the heavy wool of her coat.

"Claire!"

A thunderous voice shattered the chaotic noise of the alarm sirens.

It wasn't Julian.

Through the double fire doors burst Daniel Carter, flanked by four men in unmarked tactical gear.

Daniel didn't hesitate.

He raised a suppressed sidearm and fired twice in rapid succession.

The mercenary holding Claire dropped instantly, non-lethal impact rounds striking him squarely in the chest plate and sending him skidding across the wet floor.

Within four seconds, the remaining Castiglione operatives were pinned beneath the boots of Daniel’s unit.

The water from the sprinklers soaked Claire’s hair, plastering it against her face.

She stood amidst the broken glass and chemical wash, chest heaving, the steel wrench still gripped white-knuckled in her hand.

Daniel stepped forward, holstering his weapon, his expression etched with profound guilt.

"Claire," Daniel said breathlessly.

"Are you hurt?"

Claire slowly lowered the wrench.

She wiped the cold sprinkler water from her eyes and stared at Daniel Carter—the man who had stood beside Adrian while her heart was carved out piece by piece.

"How did you get in here, Daniel?" Claire asked, her voice dangerously calm beneath the howling sirens.

"We’ve had a surveillance perimeter around the college perimeter for two weeks," Daniel admitted, not daring to lie to her.

"Adrian knew the Castigliones were moving."

"He sent me on the first transport out of O'Hare."

Claire felt a cold, furious rage ignite in her veins, far hotter than the fear of the ambush.

"You brought them here," she said, her voice cutting through the noise like an executioner’s axe.

"Adrian's shadow brought these animals into my laboratory."

"He didn't want this, Claire," Daniel pleaded, taking a half-step closer with his palms open.

"Salvatore Castiglione figured out who you were."

"Adrian is on an international flight right now."

"He touches down in London within two hours."

Claire looked down at the three unconscious mercenaries on the floor.

Then she looked up at Daniel with a look of such absolute, unyielding contempt that the seasoned enforcer flinched as if struck.

"Tell your master," Claire said, dropping the heavy wrench with a loud, ringing clang onto the concrete floor, "that if he steps one foot onto this campus, I will call Scotland Yard, the Metropolitan Police, and the international press corps."

"I survived Adrian Moretti once."

"I will not let him make me his hostage a second time."
