Chapter 9 - The Dangerous Setup And The Midnight Sting Operation

The dark,

moonless night provided the perfect cover for our highly classified tactical operation.

Marcus stopped completely in his tracks,

taking a slow,

arrogant drag from his wet cigarette,

staring at me with an expression of pure,

unadulterated amusement.

"Officer Carter,

I presume,"

he said smoothly,

flicking the glowing ash onto the wet concrete sidewalk.

"I was wondering how long it would take for the angry,

protective mother bear to finally show her teeth."

"I am not here to play silly,

childish games with a low-level debt collector,"

I stated firmly,

stepping directly into his personal space,

ignoring the heavy stench of cheap alcohol and stale smoke radiating from his clothes.

"You approached my daughter,

you threatened her with illegal surveillance photos,

and you attempted to extort money that she does not legally owe."

"The law is a funny,

flexible thing,

Officer,"

Marcus laughed darkly,

a highly unpleasant sound that made my skin crawl violently.

"My employers do not care about court rulings,

and they certainly do not care about the emotional trauma of a fragile little nurse."

"If you ever go near the hospital again,"

I warned him,

my voice dropping to a terrifyingly quiet,

lethal whisper.

"If you ever take another photograph of my family,

I will make it my absolute life's mission to destroy every single illegal operation you run in this city."

Marcus smiled,

revealing crooked,

yellowing teeth,

completely unfazed by my aggressive,

direct threat.

"You are just one angry cop,

and my organization is incredibly vast,

powerful,

and absolutely ruthless,"

he countered confidently.

Suddenly,

the incredibly bright,

blinding spotlight of a police helicopter illuminated the entire street,

turning the dark night into brilliant,

artificial day.

Four heavily armored tactical vans screeched violently around the street corners,

completely boxing Marcus in,

cutting off absolutely every single avenue of escape.

Sergeant Ramirez kicked the door of the lead van open,

stepping out with his heavy assault rifle raised,

followed quickly by a dozen heavily armed SWAT officers.

"Actually,

Marcus,"

I said calmly,

stepping back to allow the tactical team to properly surround the terrified criminal.

"I am not just one angry cop,

I am a fully supported member of a massive federal task force,

and you just walked directly into a massive,

highly coordinated sting operation."

Marcus dropped his cigarette,

his arrogant smile vanishing entirely,

replaced instantly by a look of sheer,

unadulterated panic.

"You set me up,"

he hissed violently,

raising his hands slowly into the freezing air as the laser sights of multiple rifles painted bright red dots on his chest.

"When you dropped that envelope on my daughter's cart,

you left behind a perfect,

pristine set of fingerprints,"

I explained loudly,

making sure he heard exactly how he had failed.

"That gave a federal judge absolutely enough probable cause to issue a massive,

comprehensive warrant for your arrest,

and for the immediate raid of this disgusting bar behind you."

The SWAT officers rushed past us,

smashing the heavy wooden door of the bar into tiny splinters,

flooding into the building to secure the illegal gambling machines,

the hidden weapons caches,

and the terrified syndicate members hiding inside.

Two officers violently grabbed Marcus,

slamming him aggressively against the wet brick wall,

slapping heavy steel cuffs tightly around his wrists.

"This is not over,

Carter,"

Marcus screamed wildly,

thrashing helplessly against the incredible strength of the arresting officers.

"My bosses will never,

ever stop hunting for their money!"

"Your bosses are currently being arrested in a coordinated,

simultaneous raid across three different states,"

Ramirez informed him proudly,

walking over to stand beside me.

"The organization is completely destroyed,

the assets are entirely frozen,

and you are going to spend the rest of your miserable life in a tiny,

concrete box."

I watched with immense,

profound satisfaction as they shoved Marcus into the back of a waiting police transport van.

The terrifying threat that had loomed heavily over Emily's life was finally,

permanently neutralized.

I pulled my cell phone from my wet pocket,

dialing Emily's number,

listening to the comforting rings as the chaotic scene unfolded around me.

"Mom?"

she answered quickly,

her voice trembling with residual anxiety.

"It's done,

sweetheart,"

I told her gently,

the heavy,

crushing weight of the past six months finally lifting completely from my tired shoulders.

"They are all in custody,

the entire syndicate is broken,

May you like

and you are completely,

absolutely safe now."
