Chapter 4 - The Mother Of All Manipulations

Two days later,
the chaotic atmosphere inside the busy county courthouse was absolutely suffocating.
I sat firmly in the front row of the crowded courtroom,
holding Emily's cold hand tightly in my own,
waiting patiently for the preliminary bail hearing to begin.
Daniel and Margaret were led into the large room,
wearing matching bright orange jumpsuits,
their wrists and ankles bound heavily in thick metal chains.
Margaret looked absolutely horrific,
her expensive blonde hair dye fading aggressively,
her makeup completely washed away,
leaving her looking old,
tired,
and incredibly bitter.
She glared violently at us across the room,
her dark eyes flashing with an intense,
unrepentant hatred that sent a shiver down my spine.
Their expensive defense attorney,
a slick man named Richard Vance,
stood up confidently,
adjusting his custom silk tie.
"Your Honor,"
Vance began smoothly,
his loud voice projecting effortlessly across the echoing courtroom.
"My clients are highly respected members of this beautiful community,
and this entire situation is merely a severe domestic misunderstanding blown completely out of proportion."
The prosecutor,
a fierce woman named Sarah Jenkins,
scoffed loudly,
standing up to slam her heavy files onto her wooden desk.
"A misunderstanding,
Mr. Vance?"
Jenkins countered aggressively.
"They violently tied a woman to a chair with thick plastic zip-ties,
held her hostage in a dark shed,
and tried to extort fifty thousand dollars from her."
"There is absolutely no concrete proof of physical violence,"
Vance argued arrogantly,
smirking slightly at the stern judge.
"It was simply an intense family argument,
and they pose absolutely no flight risk."
I leaned forward,
my heart pounding furiously against my ribcage,
praying that the justice system would not fail my traumatized daughter.
"Your Honor,"
Jenkins continued,
holding up the transcript of the audio recording I had bravely captured.
"I have clear,
undeniable audio evidence of the defendants explicitly demanding money,
threatening the victim,
and mocking her absolute helplessness."
The judge,
a severe man with incredibly thick silver hair,
adjusted his glasses,
staring coldly down at the two defendants.
"Furthermore,"
Jenkins added,
dropping the massive bombshell we had discovered in the hidden safe.
"We have just officially charged the defendant,
Daniel,
with severe identity theft and massive financial fraud,
amounting to over one hundred thousand dollars in forged loans taken out in the victim's name."
A loud,
shocked murmur rippled violently through the crowded courtroom.
Daniel completely dropped his head,
staring pathetically at his chained feet,
while Margaret actually tried to take a step away from him,
as if distancing herself from the fraud would somehow save her from the kidnapping charges.
"He did that entirely on his own,"
Margaret shouted suddenly,
violating courtroom decorum,
her frantic voice echoing loudly off the high walls.
"I had absolutely no idea he was stealing her identity,
I just needed the fifty thousand to pay off the dangerous men he brought to my house!"
The judge banged his heavy wooden gavel loudly,
demanding immediate silence,
his face flushed with intense anger.
"Mrs. Margaret,"
the judge warned fiercely,
"anything you say in this courtroom will absolutely be used against you."
Margaret snapped her mouth shut,
but the incredibly severe damage to their defense was already done.
She had just publicly admitted to knowing about the extortion attempt,
and she had confirmed the existence of dangerous loan sharks,
proving they were both incredibly desperate and highly dangerous.
"Bail is firmly denied for both defendants,"
the judge ruled loudly,
striking the wooden block with his gavel one final,
decisive time.
"Given the severe violence of the extortion,
the massive financial fraud,
and the confirmed presence of dangerous criminal associates,
they remain an extreme threat to the victim and the community."
Emily let out a massive,
shuddering breath,
squeezing my hand so tightly my knuckles turned completely white.
As the heavy bailiffs grabbed Daniel and Margaret to lead them back to the dark holding cells,
Margaret turned her head,
locking her furious eyes on Emily one last time.
"You ruined this family,"
Margaret spat venomously,
her true,
evil nature entirely exposed for the entire world to see.
Emily stood up slowly,
her posture incredibly straight,
her chin held high,
no longer the terrified victim they had tied to that wooden chair.
"No,
Margaret,"
Emily replied loudly,
her strong voice echoing clearly across the silent room.
May you like
"You ruined yourselves,
and I am just taking out the trash."
