Chapter 13 - The Untraceable Money Trail And The Invisible Ghost

The incredibly loud,
chaotic,
overwhelmingly busy police precinct faded completely,
entirely into absolute silence for me as I listened to my daughter's terrified,
heartbroken,
devastated voice on the phone.
A massive,
furious,
uncontrollable wave of pure,
maternal rage washed violently,
aggressively over my entire,
tired body,
instantly,
completely overriding any sense of standard,
calm professional protocol.
"I am coming right now,
sweetheart,"
I promised fiercely,
intensely,
grabbing my heavy,
tactical jacket forcefully,
angrily from the metal coat rack.
"Do not speak to absolutely anyone,
do not sign any formal,
legal documents,
and do not let them bully you,
intimidate you,
or force you out of that building until I arrive."
I drove my unmarked,
powerful,
fast police cruiser aggressively,
dangerously through the busy,
crowded city streets,
my bright,
flashing sirens wailing loudly,
piercingly through the heavy,
stagnant afternoon traffic.
When I arrived at the massive,
sprawling,
intimidating hospital complex,
I marched confidently,
furiously,
authoritatively straight into the luxurious,
expensive,
highly decorated executive administration suite.
The hospital director,
the same kind,
elderly woman who had recently,
happily promoted Emily,
was sitting nervously,
anxiously behind her large,
mahogany desk,
looking incredibly conflicted,
sad,
and totally overwhelmed.
"Officer Carter,"
the director started hesitantly,
weakly,
holding up her trembling,
shaking hands in a defensive,
peaceful gesture.
"We have absolutely no choice in this terrible,
unfortunate matter,
because the anonymous complaints were accompanied by incredibly detailed,
highly sophisticated,
falsified digital access logs."
I slammed my hands heavily,
loudly,
violently onto her polished,
expensive desk,
leaning forward aggressively,
intimidatingly,
my eyes burning with a fierce,
protective,
unstoppable fire.
"You know perfectly,
absolutely well that Emily is completely,
totally innocent,
and you know she would never,
ever steal dangerous narcotics or neglect her vulnerable,
sick patients,"
I argued passionately,
loudly,
my voice echoing harshly,
sharply off the expensive,
wood-paneled walls.
"Somebody with highly advanced,
incredibly expensive,
military-grade hacking skills has intentionally,
maliciously infiltrated your supposedly secure,
encrypted hospital server,"
I explained clearly,
logically,
using my extensive,
specialized law enforcement experience to completely dismantle their weak,
pathetic accusations.
I immediately,
swiftly contacted Sergeant Ramirez,
demanding aggressively,
urgently that our highly skilled,
specialized cyber-crimes division launch a massive,
comprehensive investigation into the hospital's compromised,
vulnerable network.
For three incredibly long,
exhausting,
frustrating days,
we sat tirelessly,
relentlessly in a dark,
windowless,
stuffy room,
staring intensely,
obsessively at glowing,
bright computer screens filled with complex,
confusing lines of digital code.
The incredibly smart,
highly trained police hackers eventually,
painstakingly found a tiny,
almost invisible,
highly sophisticated digital backdoor planted deeply,
secretly inside the hospital system.
They tracked the incredibly complex,
bouncing,
encrypted IP address across multiple,
foreign,
untraceable servers,
finally,
shockingly tracing the expensive,
malicious attack back to a massive,
untouchable,
multi-billion dollar corporate entity.
"Carter,"
Sergeant Ramirez said quietly,
gravely,
staring in absolute,
pure disbelief at the final,
terrifying report printed on the desk.
"The malicious,
highly coordinated cyber attack was completely,
entirely funded by a massive,
shadowy shell corporation directly,
legally owned by Arthur Sterling."
My blood instantly,
violently turned to freezing,
bitter ice in my veins,
my heart pounding furiously,
rapidly,
painfully against my aching ribs.
Arthur Sterling was Daniel's incredibly wealthy,
ruthless,
absent father,
a man who wielded massive,
terrifying,
unstoppable financial power like a deadly,
lethal weapon.
He was not just a pathetic,
weak street thug like Marcus,
he was a highly sophisticated,
politically connected,
incredibly dangerous billionaire who could easily,
effortlessly buy highly trained assassins,
corrupt politicians,
and advanced,
military-grade hackers.
"He is trying to completely,
utterly destroy us because we publicly,
legally humiliated his precious,
arrogant family name,"
I realized loudly,
the dark,
terrifying truth finally,
completely becoming absolutely clear to me.
We were no longer fighting a simple,
domestic abuser,
we were actively,
dangerously at war with an incredibly powerful,
May you like
financially invincible,
completely ruthless monster.
