Chapter 8 - Whispers in the Shadows

Deep in the subterranean parking garage of the luxury hotel, the air was cool, damp, and smelled heavily of exhaust fumes and engine oil. Rows of expensive European sports cars sat parked under flickering fluorescent lights, casting long, eerie shadows across the concrete pillars.
Hidden behind a thick concrete support column near the service elevators, a figure in a dark hoodie stood completely motionless.
It was Marcus Sterling’s former assistant, a bitter, ambitious young operations analyst named David Miller.
David had spent the last two years helping Vance and Marcus cook the books, doctor expense reports, and hide fraudulent wire transfers. He was the invisible tech guy who wrote the code for the offshore shell companies. When federal agents had swarmed the executive floor an hour ago, Marcus had been dragged away in handcuffs, but David had managed to slip away down the fire escape before anyone noticed his name on the arrest warrants.
Now, clutching a heavy leather briefcase stuffed with hard drives containing encrypted backups of every single financial crime committed by Vance’s inner circle, David was plotting his escape.
He needed cash. He needed fake passports. And above all, he wanted revenge against the man who had destroyed his entire life in less than twenty-four hours: Ethan Carter.
"Damn him," David hissed under his breath, his hands trembling as he punched numbers into his burner phone. "Damn Ethan Carter and his stupid billionaire games. He thinks he's won."
David dialed a secure, encrypted messaging app, connecting to a shadowy overseas fixer he had dealt with in the past—a man known only as Viktor, who specialized in smuggling compromised corporate executives out of the country for a hefty fee.
"Viktor," David whispered urgently into the phone as the line connected. "I need an extraction. Immediately. Private airstrip outside the city limits. Midnight tonight."
"It can be arranged, David," a gravelly, cold voice replied from the other end. "But my fee has doubled. Five hundred thousand dollars in untraceable cryptocurrency, transferred before wheels-up."
"Five hundred thousand?!" David panicked. "I don't have that kind of cash on me! All my accounts are frozen!"
"Then find it," Viktor replied ruthlessly. "Or enjoy spending the next thirty years sharing a prison cell with your boss. Tick-tock, David."
Click.
The line went dead.
David slammed his fist against the concrete pillar in pure rage. Five hundred thousand dollars. Where on earth was he going to get half a million dollars in broad daylight while federal agents were searching every hotel room in the city?
Suddenly, a brilliant, terrifying idea flashed through his desperate mind.
The hotel’s central vault.
As a senior operations analyst, David had top-level security clearances. He knew the master override codes for the secondary auxiliary vault located in the sub-basement—the vault used to store high-value cash reserves, rare guest jewelry, and emergency operational funds for international VIPs.
If he could break into the secondary vault, grab the cash and bearer bonds, and slip out through the underground loading dock before security realized what was happening, he could buy his freedom.
It was a suicidal gamble. If he got caught, he’d spend the rest of his life behind bars. But desperation is a powerful motivator.
David pulled the dark hood tighter over his head, checked to make sure his keycard was tucked securely in his pocket, and stepped out from the shadows toward the heavy metal fire door leading down to the sub-basement.

He didn't know that Ethan Carter’s private security detail had already flagged his user profile on the internal network. As David slipped through the heavy door, a silent red alarm light flashed softly on a security console on the 50th floor penthouse, alerting Ethan that the rat was making its final, desperate dash.
