Chapter 4 - The Morning After

Golden sunlight poured through the massive floor-to-ceiling windows of the Presidential Suite, casting warm patterns across the pristine marble floors. Ethan stood by the window, holding a cup of freshly brewed black coffee, watching the bustling city wake up below.

The streets were already filling with cars, commuters rushing to work, oblivious to the high-stakes corporate chess match playing out above their heads.

Behind him, soft footsteps approached. Lily walked out of her bedroom, rubbing her eyes sleepily while clutching her favorite stuffed rabbit.

"Good morning, Daddy," she mumbled, yawning softly.

Ethan turned around, his stern expression instantly melting into a gentle, loving smile. He set his coffee cup down on the counter and knelt to scoop her up into his arms, pressing a soft kiss to her cheek.

"Good morning, princess. Did you sleep well?"

"Mmhmm! The bed was like a giant marshmallow," Lily giggled, wrapping her arms tightly around his neck. "Are we going to explore the city today?"

"We have a few things to take care of first," Ethan replied softly. "After breakfast, we're going to have some special visitors. How does that sound?"

"Will there be pancakes?"

Ethan chuckled. "As many pancakes as you want, princess. Room service is bringing up a feast right now."

Just on cue, a discreet knock sounded at the private suite door. Ethan set Lily down and walked over to check the digital security monitor built into the wall. Standing outside the door was Mr. Harrison, accompanied by a waiter pushing a silver-domed food trolley.

Ethan unlocked the deadbolt and opened the door.

"Good morning, Mr. Carter. Good morning, Miss Lily," Harrison greeted politely, stepping inside just enough to hand over a sleek black tablet. "I brought your breakfast, along with the preliminary security and operational logs you requested from last night."

"Thank you, Harrison," Ethan said, taking the tablet with one hand while gesturing for the waiter to set up the table. "Did anything unusual happen after I retired to my suite last night?"

Harrison’s expression turned grave. He glanced briefly at Lily, who was happily inspecting the plate of fresh strawberry pancakes the waiter had just uncovered, before lowering his voice.

"Mr. Vance arrived at the hotel at approximately 2:00 AM," Harrison reported quietly. "He didn't go to his office. Instead, he met with Rebecca in the lobby lounge for nearly an hour."

Ethan’s eyes narrowed. "Vance came to the hotel in the middle of the night to meet a fired receptionist? Interesting. Did our security cameras capture their conversation?"

"Audio was difficult to pick up over the ambient lounge music, sir, but our digital logs show that Vance handed Rebecca a physical envelope containing a significant amount of cash, and arranged a temporary stay for her in a VIP suite on the 40th floor."

A cold, humorless smile touched the corners of Ethan’s mouth. "Panicked rats always run for cover, Harrison. Vance knows his books won't stand up to an independent audit, and he thinks he can buy the silence of a disgruntled front desk clerk."

"Shall I have security escort Miss Rebecca off the property immediately, sir?" Harrison asked, his hands clasped neatly behind his back.

"No," Ethan replied smoothly, handing the tablet back to the manager. "Let them play their little game. Let Vance dig his own grave a little deeper. When you dig a hole to hide your secrets, sometimes you end up burying yourself."

"Understood, Mr. Carter. How would you like to proceed with the executive board?"

"Call an emergency board meeting for 10:00 AM sharp in the main executive boardroom," Ethan commanded, his voice carrying the absolute authority of a man who owned every brick and beam of the building. "Inform every department head, including Mr. Vance, that attendance is mandatory. No excuses."

"Consider it done, sir." Harrison bowed respectfully and exited the suite, leaving Ethan and Lily to enjoy their breakfast in peace.

Down on the 40th floor, sitting in a luxurious suite paid for by corporate funds, Rebecca was staring at a thick white envelope stuffed with ten thousand dollars in crisp hundred-dollar bills.

Julian Vance had sat on the edge of the velvet armchair just hours ago, his face carved from stone, giving her strict instructions.

“Take this money, keep your mouth shut about the financial records, and wait until I tell you what to do next,” Vance had hissed. “Ethan Carter thinks he can waltz back in here and take control? We’ll see who has the last laugh once I present the board with my restructuring plan.”

Rebecca felt a rush of adrenaline. With ten grand in her hand and the Chief Operations Officer backing her up, she felt invincible again. She genuinely believed that Vance was going to overthrow the billionaire owner and reinstate her with a promotion.

She had no idea that at that very moment, the executioner's axe was already being sharpened.
