Chapter 2 - Behind Closed Doors in the Penthouse

The private elevator whisked Ethan and Lily up to the 50th floor in mere seconds, the glass walls offering a breathtaking, panoramic view of the glittering city skyline below. Neon lights stretched out like rivers of gold and crimson, but inside the elevator cabin, the mood was serene and quiet.
When the doors opened directly into the Presidential Suite, Lily gasped softly. The space was enormous—a sprawling sanctuary of modern luxury, featuring Italian marble floors, soaring floor-to-ceiling windows, velvet furnishings, and a grand piano sitting in the corner overlooking the horizon. A fresh bouquet of white lilies sat on a sleek mahogany coffee table, their sweet fragrance filling the air.
"Do you like it, sweetheart?" Ethan asked, kneeling down to look his daughter in the eye.
Lily nodded, her dark eyes wide with wonder. "It's huge, Daddy! It looks like a castle in the clouds."
Ethan smiled, a genuine, warm smile that completely transformed his tired face. He reached out and brushed a stray lock of hair from her forehead. "Good. Because this is our home for the next few weeks. No more running, no more hiding."
Just then, a discreet chime sounded near the private foyer. Mr. Harrison stood there, accompanied by the head housekeeper carrying a tray of warm milk and artisan pastries for Lily.
"Mr. Carter," Harrison said respectfully, remaining by the doorway. "Everything is set to your exact specifications. The security detail has been briefed, and the private floor is locked down. No one can access this level without your biometric authorization."
"Thank you, Harrison," Ethan said, standing up and walking toward the foyer while keeping his voice low so Lily wouldn't hear. "And thank you for handling the situation downstairs swiftly. But I want a full report on how someone like Rebecca managed to become the face of my flagship hotel."
Harrison swallowed hard, sensing the underlying steel in Ethan’s voice. "Mr. Carter, to be completely transparent with you... Rebecca was promoted six months ago under the direct recommendation of Mr. Julian Vance, our Chief Operations Officer."
Ethan’s eyes narrowed slightly, a dangerous glint flashing in his gaze. "Vance? I thought Vance was stationed overseas managing the European expansion."
"He returned to headquarters three months ago, sir," Harrison replied cautiously. "And... well, there have been some changes in management culture since you took your sabbatical from active day-to-day operations. Some employees have adopted a rather... elitist attitude. They believe luxury hospitality only applies to those draped in designer brands and driving exotic sports cars."
"An expensive mistake on their part," Ethan murmured coldly. "Luxury is about service, humility, and making people feel valued, not flashing price tags. If Vance thinks he can turn my hotels into exclusive country clubs for the arrogant elite, he is sorely mistaken."
Harrison nodded in agreement. "Shall I call a board meeting for tomorrow morning, sir? We can have Mr. Vance present to explain the recent hiring protocols."
"No," Ethan replied, shaking his head slowly. "Let him sleep. Let him think everything is running smoothly. I want to observe how this hotel operates from the ground up for the next twenty-four hours. I want to see what else Vance has been hiding while I was away."
"Understood, Mr. Carter. I will make sure no one disturbs you." Harrison bowed respectfully and backed out of the suite, sliding the heavy mahogany door shut.
Ethan turned back to check on Lily. She had already kicked off her worn sneakers and was curled up on the oversized velvet sofa, nibbling on a pastry with pure contentment. Watching her, Ethan felt a deep surge of fierce protectiveness.
A year ago, Ethan Carter was not just a billionaire hotelier; he was a grieving widower trying to piece his life back together after losing his beloved wife, Clara. In the chaos of grief, corporate vultures within his own company—led quietly by his ambitious Chief Operations Officer, Julian Vance—had tried to stage a silent coup, manipulating financial reports and attempting to squeeze Ethan out of his own empire.
Ethan had discovered the betrayal just in time. Instead of fighting a messy legal war in the public eye, he had gone undercover, traveling light with his daughter, living ordinary lives in modest apartments across different cities, quietly gathering undeniable evidence of embezzlement, bribery, and corporate corruption.
And now, they had returned to the very heart of the empire. The trap was set. All Ethan had to do was wait for the rats to show their true colors.
Little did Ethan know, down on the ground floor, Rebecca was not packing her bags to leave in shame. Instead, she was sitting in the dimly lit employee locker room, dialing a number on her encrypted burner phone with trembling, furious fingers.

She wasn't going down alone. If she was losing her job, she was going to drag everyone down with her—starting with the man who got her fired.
