Chapter 6 - The Web of Deceit Begins to Unravel

The silence in the boardroom was so heavy it felt suffocating. Every pair of eyes in the room shifted instantly from Ethan Carter to Julian Vance.
Vance’s face twitched, a bead of cold sweat rolling down his temple despite the crisp air conditioning. He quickly forced his expression back into one of indignant shock, slamming his palm flat against the mahogany table.
"This is absurd!" Vance barked, manufacturing outrage to cover his panic. "Are you seriously accusing me of conspiring with a front desk clerk based on malicious rumors and out-of-context security footage? Mr. Carter, I have dedicated fifteen years of my life to building this hotel group! My reputation is spotless!"
Ethan didn't blink. He calmly reached over and tapped the sleek black tablet lying in front of him, sliding it across the polished wooden surface until it came to a halt right in front of Vance.
"Spotless? Is that what you call embezzling four point two million dollars from the European expansion fund over the past eight months?" Ethan asked, his voice dangerously calm.
Vance stared down at the tablet screen. The display showed a detailed, encrypted financial ledger itemizing offshore wire transfers, falsified construction invoices, and unauthorized corporate bonuses routed directly to shell companies registered in the Cayman Islands—companies whose ultimate beneficiary was listed as Julian Vance.
Marcus Sterling, sitting right beside Vance, turned ghostly pale. His hands began to shake uncontrollably as he realized that the digital firewall they had spent months building had been systematically dismantled overnight.
"This... this is fabricated!" Vance stammered, his voice cracking slightly as he pushed the tablet away as if it were a venomous snake. "Anyone with basic coding skills can fake a digital ledger! You're trying to frame me because you want to consolidate power after being absent for a year!"
"Fabricated?" Ethan repeated softly. He pressed a button on his remote control.
Instantly, the massive projector screen at the front of the boardroom flickered to life. A high-resolution video began to play.
It was footage captured in the subterranean employee locker room from 2:15 AM just hours ago. The audio was crystal clear.
On the screen, the video showed Julian Vance handing a thick white envelope of cash directly to Rebecca, followed by his distinct voice saying: “Take this money, keep your mouth shut about the financial records, and wait until I tell you what to do next. If Ethan Carter starts auditing the books, everything we built will crumble.”
The entire boardroom gasped. Several board members leaned forward, their expressions shifting from shock to absolute disgust.
Vance slumped back into his leather chair, all the color entirely drained from his face. The mask had shattered completely. He looked like a cornered animal trapped in the crosshairs of a hunter.
"You... you had the room bugged," Vance whispered, his voice trembling with helpless fury.
"I didn't need to bug the room," Ethan replied coldly, leaning back and lacing his fingers together. "When you run an empire, Vance, you learn to spot rats before they even start chewing through the wiring. You thought because I was grieving my wife and taking time to raise my daughter that I was blind. You thought you could loot my company from the inside out."
"I saved this company during your absence!" Vance suddenly snapped, abandoning all pretense of innocence as desperation took over. His voice rose in a frantic screech. "While you were wandering around the country playing hide-and-seek with your kid, I kept the stock prices stable! I expanded our footprint! I deserved that money! Without me, this entire hotel group would have collapsed!"
"No, Vance," Ethan said, standing up slowly to his full height. His imposing presence dominated the room. "You didn't save the company. You bled it. And today, the bleeding stops."
Ethan turned his gaze toward the head of corporate finance sitting beside Vance. "Marcus. Do you want to join your partner in federal prison, or would you prefer to cooperate with the federal prosecutors waiting outside the building right now?"
Marcus swallowed hard, looked at Vance’s defeated expression, and immediately broke. He burst into tears, sliding out of his chair and dropping to his knees beside the conference table.
"I'll cooperate! I have all the physical receipts! Vance forced me to sign off on the fraudulent invoices! Please, Mr. Carter, have mercy!"
"Take them away," Ethan commanded firmly.
The heavy oak doors of the boardroom swung open wide. Two burly private security guards, flanked by federal law enforcement officers in dark suits, marched into the room. Before Julian Vance could even open his mouth to protest, cold steel handcuffs snapped around his wrists, clicking shut with a definitive, chilling sound.
As Vance was dragged out of the boardroom in disgrace, screaming obscenities and cursing Ethan’s name, the remaining board members sat in stunned, reverent silence.
Ethan adjusted his cuffs, walked back to his seat, and sat down calmly.

"Now," Ethan said, looking around the room at the stunned faces of his executives. "Let's get back to running the best hotel group in the world. But before we discuss quarterly earnings, there is one more matter of business to attend to downstairs."
