Chapter 9 - The Dismantling of an Empire

Sloan’s empire didn't fall with a dramatic explosion or a cinematic shootout.

It dissolved quietly,

systematically,

through the cold,

unyielding mathematics of Clara’s terminal.

While I kept the suppressed barrel of my MP5 trained on Sloan’s chest,

Clara sat across the mahogany desk,

her fingers flying across the holographic keyboard with terrifying efficiency.

“Transferring primary ownership of the West River logistics shell corporations to Vale Holdings,

” she announced,

her voice entirely devoid of emotion.

“Routing all active accounts through our automated escrow protocols.

”

“Freezing the primary fentanyl distribution nodes across Brooklyn and Queens via federal law enforcement API hooks.

”

Sloan slumped back into his leather chair,

watching his entire criminal enterprise evaporate into digital ether with hollow,

unblinking eyes.

“You’re destroying decades of infrastructure,

” he whispered hoarsely.

“I’m sanitizing a sewer,

” I corrected,

keeping my weapon steady.

“You brought poison into my city,

Patrick.

”

“You broke the one rule that kept men like you breathing.

”

“And for that,

you get to watch your empire get liquidated down to the last folding chair.

”

The heavy oak office door suddenly burst open behind us.

I spun around,

my finger tightening on the trigger,

ready to unleash a torrent of lead.

It wasn't Sloan’s mercenaries.

It was a dozen federal agents wearing tactical raid gear emblazoned with FBI insignias,

led by Special Agent Vance whom Clara had quietly notified twenty minutes prior.

Vance lowered his tactical shotgun as he took in the scene: Patrick Sloan sitting pale and broken behind his desk,

Clara typing calmly on her terminal,

and me holding an MP5.

“Mr.

Vale,

” Vance said,

a knowing smirk touching his lips.

“I see you’ve been busy auditing.

”

“We’ve preserved the entire financial ledger for you,

Agent Vance,

” Clara said sweetly,

turning the monitor toward him.

“Every shell company,

every bribe,

every narcotics shipment.

”

“It’s all indexed and timestamped.

”

Vance stepped forward,

nodding appreciatively at the screen before gesturing to the agents behind him.

“Cuff him,

” Vance ordered,

pointing at Sloan.

Two agents lunged forward,

hauling Sloan out of his chair and slamming cuffs onto his wrists with a sharp,

metallic click.

As they dragged him toward the door,

Sloan cast one last venomous glare back at us.

“You haven't won,

” Sloan hissed through clenched teeth.

“Someone else will always take my place.

”

“Let them,

” I replied,

lowering my weapon with a cold,

absolute assurance.

“We’ll be waiting with spreadsheets.

”

The federal agents cleared the room,

leaving Clara and me standing alone in the quiet ruins of the empire.

Clara closed her laptop,

let out a long,

slow breath,

and looked up at me with those deep midnight-blue eyes.

“Well,

” she murmured,

adjusting her glasses.

May you like

“That concludes tonight’s accounting audit.
